Marvel producer Richie Palmer has teased the eventual return of the elite super-group The Illuminati. Despite the fact that they were all rather unceremoniously killed by The Scarlet Witch during the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Palmer explains to The Direct that, thanks to the multiverse, it would not be difficult to bring the superhero team back.
“The Illuminati’s been a group we’ve wanted to introduce in our movies for years. They’re a secret organization that works off the grid. They do the things that the other groups like the Avengers wouldn’t be too happy about… To do it in an alternate universe in the Multiverse, was a really exciting thing because we get to meet a version of this group in this other universe, and then we still might get to see an Illuminati of our main MCU one day, which is also very exciting.”
So, Richie Palmer makes it clear that The Illuminati introduced in the Doctor Strange sequel are not the version of the group that would be considered the “main” MCU version. Doctor Strange and The Scarlet Witch come across The Illuminati when traveling across the multiverse in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Apprehended in Earth-838, Strange is brought before several variants of familiar characters including Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, John Krasinski as Reed Richards AKA Mr. Fantastic, Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter AKA Captain Carter, Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau AKA Captain Marvel, Anson Mount as Blackagar Boltagon, and Charles Xavier, the leader of the X-Men played once again by Patrick Stewart.

While there are some changes to the line-up when compared to the pages of Marvel Comics, The Illuminati similarly present themselves as a hugely powerful force that fight to maintain order in the universe. Unfortunately, their collective genius had not planned for the arrival of The Scarlet Witch.
Many Marvel Fans Were Disappointed to See The Illuminati Destroyed So Quickly
Marvel Studios
As Richie Palmer points out, Marvel Studios has been looking to introduce The Illuminati to the MCU for some time. And fans have been just as excited to see them introduced. So, many were disappointed to see them destroyed by The Scarlet Witch so quickly, with Mr. Fantastic turned into spaghetti, Black Bolt blowing up his own head, Captain Carter cut in half with her own shield, and Professor X murdered inside his own mind.
Thankfully, now that it has been confirmed that these variants who make up The Illuminati of Earth-838 are not considered the main MCU version, fans can once again look forward to seeing the superhero think-tank make another appearance. Likely with different members and with much less murder.
Directed by Sam Raimi and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finds the Master of the Mystic Arts traveling the multiverse in order to protect America Chavez (Gomez), a teenager capable of traveling across universes, from Wanda Maximoff.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now available to stream on Disney+.
