Marvel’s Werewolf By Night Director Discusses the Impact of Color Re-Release on the Ending

Summary

  • Marvel Studios’ Werewolf By Night Halloween special, featuring supernatural characters like the werewolf, Man-Thing, and Elsa Bloodstone, is recognized as a standout Marvel project on Disney+.
  • The upcoming re-release of the special with vibrant colors adds a refreshing twist to the previously black and white presentation, maintaining the emotional resonance and engagement of the original version.
  • Director Michael Giacchino and his team paid meticulous attention to detail when colorizing Werewolf By Night, making shot-by-shot color choices to strike the perfect balance and enhance specific colors in each scene.

Marvel Studios’ Werewolf By Night took a bold step within the MCU, infusing classical horror influences and introducing supernatural characters like the titular werewolf portrayed by Gael Garcia Bernal, Man-Thing, and the monster-hunter Elsa Bloodstone. This 53-minute special, recognized as one of Disney+’s standout Marvel projects, offered a refreshing twist to the universe. Fans are in for a treat as Marvel plans to re-release this Halloween special with a vibrant makeover, adding color to the previously black and white presentation.

Director Michael Giacchino, in an interview with Marvel.com, shared his thoughts on the color re-release’s impact on the film’s ending. In the original version, the transition from black and white to color was a pivotal moment, symbolizing Elsa’s ability to create a vibrant new world, bringing color to a previously dull existence. Giacchino initially had concerns about how this transition would translate in the color version and whether it would affect the storytelling’s emotional depth.

However, after watching the colored rendition, he found that while it offered a different experience, it still retained the same emotional resonance and engagement as the black and white version. He explained:

“I did have one concern, which was obviously in the black and white one, you have a big turn at the end when it goes to color. The intention there was that Elsa created a whole new world. The possibilities are endless. What’s she going to do with this new power she has? That was reflected in bringing color to a place that was for years a dreary part of her life. She was able to finally bring color to it. I was worried, how will that affect the storytelling if the whole thing is in color? But after watching it, I still felt the same feelings. I still felt the same about everything. It’s certainly a different experience than in black and white, but it’s just a different experience. It’s just, as I said, a new way to experience that story.”

Werewolf By Night Color Re-Release Premieres on October 20th

Director Michael Giacchino revealed that his creative team displayed meticulous attention to detail when it came to the colorization of Werewolf By Night. Their primary goal was to strike the perfect balance, rather than resorting to a blanket increase in saturation. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, Giacchino stressed the importance of making shot by shot color choices.

“You’re always thinking about, what are we accentuating here? You can boost every color, but that’s not really the answer. It’s about boosting certain colors, and it’s really a scene-by-scene choice that you have to make. It’s not just a global thing that you can put a filter on and go, OK, it’s done,” Giacchino explained. “You must go in almost shot by shot. We spent a lot of time in a dark room at Disney looking at every single shot, one by one, and going, you know what? That’s great, but maybe a little more contrast and push the red a little bit.”

The revamped color version of Werewolf By Night is set to make its debut on Disney+ on October 20th.
