Matt Reeves Says Cloverfield Aliens Were Inspired by Godzilla

Matt Reeves, the filmmaker behind the first Cloverfield installment, says the aliens were inspired by the infamous Godzilla monster.

Matt Reeves had no idea his 2008 hit film Cloverfield would be the start of a franchise that has seen three films released so far. However, the found footage monster/alien movie was a tremendous success raking in over $170 million at the box office against a $25 million budget. Cloverfield saw Michael Stahl-David, Jessica Lucas, Lizzy Caplan, T.J. Miller, Odette Annable, and Mike Vogel in prominent roles as they avoided the massive monstrosity terrorizing New York City.

The fast-paced action and memorable set pieces, such as the Statue of Liberty’s head flying through the city streets, provided one of the greatest monster movies of the 2000s. However, every monster movie needs to take inspiration from somewhere, and Reeves recently shared how he took some notes from Godzilla while crafting Cloverfield. The director spoke with MovieWeb’s own Tim Kraft, where Reeves shed some light on his 2008 blockbuster.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Totally. Yeah, I mean, that was that was definitely the inception of the movie was to do Godzilla on the ground view point of view from somebody who had a handycam. Who’d had no idea, you know, because in the Godzilla movies, there’s always those big, wide shots of like crowds running. And the idea was, Oh, what have you saw the movie from that point of view down there on the street with one of those characters and today, or back when we did it, that camera, that person might have had a tiny camera like a handycam today you’d have on your phone? They would do, you know, that’s what that’s how we’ve done.”

Of course, the idea paid off as Cloverfield has become a massively successful franchise, with additional sequels releasing in 2016 and 2018, titled 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox, respectively.

Cloverfield 4 Is Currently in the Works

Paramount Pictures

It’s been five years since a Cloverfield installment was released, and it’s about time the next entry in the franchise arrived. Luckily, Matt Reeves has confirmed that work has begun on an eventual Cloverfield 4, which will serve more so as a sequel than the other two entries. Of course, the director was tight-lipped regarding the status of the project. However, he mentions that he is quite excited about a return to the Cloverfield universe, whether he’s a part of it or not.

“I have no idea. I’m super excited about us doing more, and I can’t give you information about that of course because that’s the way Cloverfield works. To be honest with you, you never know what you’re going to do. Even though my work is all genre work, I have to feel something personal about it. Cloverfield is very much about my anxieties.”

Here’s to hoping an eventual Cloverfield 4 is coming sooner rather than later, as fans have patiently waited for more from the franchise for quite some time.
