Natascha McElhone Asks Jesus for Help in Carmen

Inspired by true events, Carmen follows the titular character who lives a life of servitude from the age of 16 to 50, taking care of her brother who enters the priesthood of their Church. Though when the Church abandons Carmen, she’s mistaken for the new priest, allowing her to see life in new ways.

Carmen is set in a village in Malta, starring Natascha McElhone, Michaela Farrugia, Steven Love, Richard Clarkin, and more. It’s written and directed by Valerie Buhagiar, marking her third appearance in the director’s seat after first appearing as a performer in Roadkill, Highway 61, Expecting, A Winter Tale, and Adriatico My Love, Bad Blood, and many more.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Carmen is set to release theatrically in New York and Los Angeles, as well as on VOD on September 23, 2022. Ahead of the release, we have an exclusive clip to premiere. “Dear blessed Jesus, help me,” begins the clip. We see Carmen in a church, praying over the top of a pew and crying. She continues her prayer, gathering herself by its end. We then hear a creak fill the room as the confession booth door slowly opens. A pigeon sits inside. You can watch it in full below.

Carmen Official Trailer

In the official trailer for Carmen, we see her outlining her servitude as she’s assured it will allow her to live “eternally in bliss.” She explains that she “has been her brother’s housekeeper since she was 16.” She then walks into the confession booth we see the pigeon in from the exclusive clip and gives bad advice to a woman who confides in her, thinking she is the priest.

We then see cuts of her giving more and more advice under the guise of a priest before she meets Paulo (Love). “No one can blame me for falling in love… it is rare and beautiful,” continues the trailer as the two are seen in romantic shots on a boat with wine. All while this happens, Carmen appears younger and younger.

Fans of McElhone can recognize her from many other notable films including Solaris, Ronin, The Truman Show, Big Nothing, and more. Love is also no stranger to the screen, having roles in Joseph and Mary, Here for Blood, Solo, and Supernatural.

Carmen comes to us from Good Deed Entertainment (GDE) and is a production of Falkun Films and Aiken Heart Films. It will be released on VOD platforms including AppleTV/iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Vudu, Xfinity Cable, and more.
