Netflix Debuts New Trailer for Western Romance Series ‘Ransom County’

A new trailer for the upcoming Netflix

Western romance series, Ransom County, has now left the stables, with the footage teasing a tale of generational struggle over family land that is sure to have fans thinking of Taylor Sheridan’s monumental hit series, Yellowstone. And they would be right to do so, as Netflix’s head of drama, Jinny Howe, has described Ransom County as nothing less than “Virgin River meets Yellowstone.” Which should amply tease the steamy Western series ahead. You can check out the newly released trailer and details of Ransom County below.

Based on the Jodi Thomas series of books, Ransom County was created, written, and executive produced by April Blair (Wednesday). The series finds Josh Duhamel (Transformers, Safe Haven) and Minka Kelly (Euphoria, Titans) in the lead as Staten Kirkland and Quinn O’Grady, respectively, with the rest of the ensemble cast comprised of Marianly Tejada (One of Us is Lying), Jack Schumacher (Top Gun: Maverick), Eoin Macken (La Brea), Lizzy Greene (A Million Little Things), Garrett Wareing (Manifest), Andrew Liner (Vampire Academy), Jaren K. Robledo (Rez Ball), Hollywood icon James Brolin (Westworld, Sweet Tooth), and more.

Ransom County is due to land on Netflix on April 17, 2025, and you can check out the official synopsis for the Western romance series below.

‘Ransom County’ Adds a Little More Romance to the ‘Yellowstone’-Style Drama

Should the first season of Ransom County be as successful as Netflix no doubt hopes it’ll be, audiences can expect to see a lot more from the Lone Star State. The streamer has optioned the entire series of novels written by Jodi Thomas, which consists of 12 books, starting with “Ransom County.” Series creator April Blair has teased what’s to come in the adaptation, promising a tale of lust, deceit, and heartache.

“At its core, Ransom Canyon isn’t just a town, it’s an idea. It’s the painful longing for your first love. It’s the burning desire to protect your family. It’s cowboys and lovers, grifters and thieves. Lust, deceit, heartache, home … Ransom has it all,” Blair tells Tudum. “I think people are going to fall in love with this little slice of Texas and the dramas and romances that we created there.”

New Western shows from here on out (at least, for the foreseeable future) will inevitably be compared to Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan’s huge hit series that continues to spawn all manner of spin-offs. Well, when it comes to Ransom County, it sounds like that comparison is apt, with Netflix’s Jinny Howe calling the show “Virgin River meets Yellowstone.”

“It’s a multi-generational family show set on a ranch, and we say it’s Virgin River meets Yellowstone. We think that it’s going to deliver on all the romance and again it will be a really beautiful vista and setting, very escapist. It is in development in the early stages, but we’re very excited about it; it feels very promising.”
