Nicholas Cage’s Spider-Man Noir Won’t Appear in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Cage says he was never contacted about reprising his role as the iconic detective, although he loves the character.

When Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse appeared in theaters in 2018, audiences were blown away by all the different versions of Spider-Man, the darkest and most mysterious being Spider-Man Noir, voiced by none other than Nicolas Cage. Unfortunately, it appears that he won’t be returning as the brooding detective in the upcoming sequel, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. During an interview with Screen Rant, Cage was asked if he was reprising his role, to which he responded with a dismal negative:

“You’d have to ask Sony. I don’t know what’s going on with that. No one’s spoken to me about that. Ask them. I don’t know. I really don’t. I wish they would. I love Spider-Man Noir, too. I think that’s a great character. Spider-Man’s the coolest superhero. And then you combine that with Cagney and Bogart and Edward G. Robinson, come on, it’s a great character.”

Cagney, Bogart, and Robinson refer to three actors who were known for their roles in 1930s detective noir films, which were huge inspirations for Cage’s character. While he says he loves the character and would love to play the retro Spider-Man again, he won’t appear in the next Spider-Verse movie in June. The mech-driving Peni Parker and the comedic Spider-Ham do not appear to be returning for the sequel, either.

Nicolas Cage Could Still Return as Spider-Man Noir in Later Films

We do know that Miles Morale’s Spider-Man is returning, of course, along with Spider-Gwen and Peter B. Parker, the latter connecting with older audiences as he dealt with back problems, weight gain, and a heartbreaking divorce in the previous movie. We will also see over a dozen new Spider-Men and Spider-Women, including Spider-Man 2099, who appears to play an antagonistic role and will be voiced by Oscar Isaac.

There’s already a confirmed third film in the Spider-Verse series, along with an unnamed spin-off, so it’s possible that Nicolas Cage could return for either – of maybe even both – of those films. His next project is Renfield, a strange horror-comedy putting Cage in the shoes of none other than Count Dracula himself. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse is expected to land in theaters on June 2nd, 2023, written by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham. The cast includes Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Jake Johnson, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac. It will be distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing and produced by Colombia Pictures.
