Lord of War, the 2005 crime drama starring Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent), arrives on a Best Buy exclusive SteelBook® in 4K Ultra HDTM (+ Blu-ray™ + Digital) on June 6 from Lionsgate.
Directed by Andrew Niccol (The Host, Good Kill, Anon), Lord of War follows Yuri Orlov (Cage), who by chance discovers his one talent — illegal arms dealing. With his brother’s help, Yuri reaches the top of his trade, supplying anyone whose check clears, including merciless dictators. His skills and quick wits bring him everything he’s ever wanted — and help him elude a persistent Interpol agent. But at the peak of his prowess, he discovers his customers might demand more than he can give…and those he’s trying to protect could become deadly liabilities. Yuri is as conflicted as the countries he sells arms in, and now, he must face the consequences of his criminal history.
The film is inspired by several real-life arms dealers and smugglers, but it’s primarily based on the “Merchant of Death,” Viktor Bout. A Russian arms dealer, Bout was a former Soviet military translator who used his multiple companies to smuggle weapons worldwide during the 1990s and early 2000s. For highlighting illicit arms trafficking by the arms industry, the film was endorsed by the human rights group Amnesty International.
Lord of War costars Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Training Day, The Northman) as Interpol agent Jack Valentine, Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club, Suicide Squad, Morbius) as Yuri’s business partner and brother Vitaly Orlov, and Bridget Moynahan (I, Robot, Battle Los Angeles, John Wick) as Yuri’s wife and model Ava Fontaine. In a supporting role, Ian Holm (Chariots of Fire, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ratatouille) appears as Simeon Weisz, who is mostly based on Sarkis Soghanalian, a.k.a. the “Cold War’s largest arms merchant.”
