The BAFTA’s took place on Sunday in London, and this year’s ceremony was dominated by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which led the pack for nominations with 13 in total. As the event got underway, the accolades began to stack up with the movie winning Best Editing, Best Score and Best Cinematography, but it was Downey Jr. who claimed the movie’s first big win of the night, following up his wins at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and the Golden Globes Awards.
Stepping up to accept the award, Downey Jr. emotionally said:
“When I was 15, I wanted to be Peter O’Toole. When I was 25, I worked for Richard Attenbourgh and Anthony Hopkins. When I was 35, I finally understood why Dickie thought Tony would be a better role model for me than Peter. When I was 42, I did two films for Guy Ritchie and learned how to make big Hollywood movies with a civil British flare. I then played a guy named Tony in the MCU for about 12 years and then recently, that dude Chris Nolan suggested I attempt an understated approach as a last-ditch effort to perhaps resurrect my dwindling credibility. So I share this with my fellow nominees, this has been an exceptional year.”
Despite some tough competition from the likes of Poor Things, Saltburn, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Holdovers, and Barbie, Oppenheimer made its mark once again, as the movie about the atomic bomb continues to blow away the competition.
