Paul Mescal Feels Pressure of Gladiator 2 Box Office Expectations

Gladiator II is shaping up to be the most epic cinematic event of the year so far, and to say the pressure is on for it to perform well at the box office would be an understatement. As a sequel to Ridley Scott’s phenomenal original that came out in 2000, expectations are perhaps the highest they’ve ever been for a movie, and for star Paul Mescal, whose shoulders – in a way – the film rests on. Sure, he has Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington backing him up, but Mescal is the focus here, and that’s a fact that he said only adds to the gravity of the situation.

Produced on a budget of more than $250 million dollars, Mescal told Variety in a recent interview that he takes personal responsibility when it comes to how well the film performs at the box office. In a year when theaters are struggling, he commented that if something like Gladiator II can’t give them the boost they need, then he doesn’t know what can.

“I do feel the pressure, and I do feel the desire for this to make money. The box office needs a shot in the arm, and if films like Gladiator II aren’t doing it, it would be concerning. So I do feel a responsibility.”

The pressure was also on Mescal when it came time to step into the role of Lucius Verus, the son of Russell Crowe’s character of Maximus from the first movie. Taken prisoner by the Roman army and forced to fight as a gladiator, he’s front and center. Following in the footsteps of Crowe was no easy feat, but for Washington, who stars as Macrinus, he said Mescal managed to do the impossible.

That’s pressure, man! And he’s coming in behind Russell Crowe! And he pulled it off!

‘Gladiator II’ Faces Some Still Competition at the Box Office

While Gladiator II is hoping to inject a fusion of cash into the box office this month, another highly-anticipated release is opening the same weekend: Wicked. In a scenario reminiscent of last year’s Barbenheimer, the two completely different films will go head-to-head (Wickiator? Gladiated?), competing for audiences’ money over the Thanksgiving holiday.

That being said, at this point, Wicked will be the clear winner based on early box office projections, which comes as no surprise, really, considering it’s a more family-friendly affair than Mescal’s film. The PG-rated musical starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is expected to gross upwards of $100 million, while the R-rated Gladiator II is only estimated to do anywhere between $60 – $80 million.

Still, it appears as if Mescal will get his wish in some form or fashion, as it’s obvious based on those numbers that the box office will be the true winner next week. Whether Gladiator II manages to stay the course and eventually make back its budget remains to be seen, but one thing’s for sure: considering the early reviews of Scott’s sequel, it’s already a success in the eyes of many.

Gladiator 2 is the follow-up to Ridley Scott’s award-winning film Gladiator from 2000. Scott returns to direct the sequel, with Paul Mescal staring as Lucius, alongside Denzel Washington and Joseph Quinn as the villain Emperor Geta. Gladiator 2 had been stuck in development hell for years before a script written by David Scarpa finally moved forward.
