Fans of R.L. Stine have even more to be thankful for this year, as not only is a new Fear Street movie debuting on Netflix, but the author himself has just confirmed that there are at least three more films in development. The series made its premiere on the streaming service back in 2021 when a trilogy of movies came out just weeks apart, with the news of a fourth standalone film breaking in 2023. Filming on The Prom Queen wrapped in May 2024, and it’s been confirmed that it will hit Netflix later this year.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the upcoming second season of the Disney+ Goosebumps series, Stine broke the news that “the writers are working” on more Fear Street movies for Netflix, and that he’s got his “fingers crossed” they’ll eventually come to fruition. He didn’t reveal much else, so it’s unclear at this point if it will be another trilogy like the first set of movies were, or more standalone films like The Prom Queen.

With news of more adaptations coming down the line, let’s revisit the complicated nature of R.L. Stine film adaptations.
Stine’s Fear Street novels have sold more than 80 million copies around the world, and are a big hit with readers even today, 35 years after the publication of the first book, The New Girl. Unlike his Goosebumps books, which feature younger characters in the 7 to 11 age range, the more mature Fear Street series highlights older teens in supernatural situations. Directed by Leigh Janiak, Netflix’s Fear Street movies were the talk of the summer that year for not only capturing the essence of Stine’s work, but also for not shying away from the gore or slasher elements readers have come to love.
R.L. Stine Praises ‘Goosebumps: The Vanishing’
Fear Street and Netflix aside, Disney+ had their own hit on their hands when Goosebumps premiered on the streaming service in 2023. Unlike the original 1995 show where each episode told a different story, creators Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller opted to tell a complete arc from beginning to end with the ten-episode series, which currently holds a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Season 2, dubbed Goosebumps: The Vanishing, will retain some of the anthological nature of the classic series by focusing on a whole new story and crop of characters, rather than continuing from where things left off in Season 1. Think American Horror Story, but for kids. For Stine, he says part of what makes the show fun is its many twists that remain faithful to the books.
“It’s the surprises, for one thing – the shocks. When I write a Goosebumps book, that’s my most important thing, the twists and the shocks […] I think they’re not predictable. So much of children’s literature is so linear, and so many horror movies, you know what’s coming. But I always try to have something that turns it all around that no one’s expecting.”
All eight episodes of Goosebumps: The Vanishing premiere on Disney+ on Jan. 10, and look for Fear Street: The Prom Queen to hit Netflix later this year.
