Rian Johnson Says Glass Onion Character’s Likeness To Elon Musk Was a “Horrible, Horrible Accident.”

Ed Norton’s Glass Onion character Miles Bron has been said to have an uncanny likeness to Elon Musk, but Rian Johnson says it’s all a coincidence.

Netflix

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is currently sitting at the top of Netflix’s movie chart, with its predecessor Knives Out in a close second position. The popularity of the sequel has seen many fans jumping on social media to question the likeness between Ed Norton’s character Miles Bron and billionaire Elon Musk. However, according to director Rian Johnson, the similarities between the fictional and real-life tech tycoons is completely unintentional. Speaking to Wired, Johnson commented:

“There’s a lot of general stuff about that sort of species of tech billionaire that went directly into [Glass Onion]. But obviously, it has almost a weird relevance in exactly the current moment. A friend of mine said, ‘Man, that feels like it was written this afternoon.’ And that’s just sort of a horrible, horrible accident, you know? The intent was to accurately reflect what it’s been like to have our heads in the middle of the cultural sphere for the past six years. It’s a pretty nightmarish kind of carnival, Fellini-esque inflated reality right now.”

Of course, the story for Glass Onion was written before Elon Musk’s recent takeover of Twitter, and Johnson has made it clear that Norton’s character is simply an archetypical interpretation of the modern billionaire. However, for those who want to believe there is more intentional link between the two, his explanation will probably not stop the rumors from continuing to circulate.

Empire/Netflix

Many sequels fail to live up to expectations, but that has certainly not happened with Glass Onion. The film’s limited theatrical release surprised everyone by bringing in a respectable estimated $15 million from less than 700 cinemas. While Netflix have not confirmed the exact figure taken during the movie’s release, it was clear that there was plenty of interest in the movie and that continued with its Netflix debut which attracted around 35 million households.

When it comes to reviews, Glass Onion has seen an almost unanimously positive response from both critics and audiences who have bought into Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc in a big way and are now eagerly awaiting his third case. While there is going to be a little wait for that to happen, Johnson recently revealed that he has started working on the script for the yet-to-be-titles Knives Out 3.

“It’s such a weird time right now because I’m just starting to work on writing the next mystery movie, and it’ll be a few years before it comes out and God only knows what the landscape’s gonna look like at that point. I feel like trying to guess where we’re gonna be next is maybe a fool’s errand.”

Johnson’s comments about the “landscape” are a linked to the limited theatrical run of Glass Onion, which could have made much more money if it had been given a wider release. With Netflix suggesting that they will be continuing to use cinema releases for their movies as a “marketing tool”, it is yet to be seen whether Knives Out 3 will be given the same treatment or will end up getting a wider initial release is something that, as Johnson says, could change a lot over the next couple of years.
