Rob Zombie Goes Family Friendly as The Munsters Gets PG Rating

The Munsters has gotten its official rating. The new reboot from writer-director Rob Zombie has been rated PG, the first film from the horror filmmaker to be given a family friendly rating. The PG rating is for “macabre and suggestive material, scary images, and language.” In Zombie’s horror films, the director has fully embraced a hard R rating, but the PG rating is more faithful to the source material that the film is based on.

“For those of you speculating, wondering and assuming that THE MUNSTERS would be dirty, violent and nasty… well, you are wrong. It’s all good down on Mockingbird Lane,” Zombie says of the new rating on Instagram.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Rob Zombie serves as writer and director of The Munsters, a project he has said he’s been chasing for over 20 years as a huge fan of the franchise. His new take will introduce new versions of the monster family including Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman Munster, Sheri Moon Zombie as Lily, and Daniel Roebuck as Grandpa. The cast also features Richard Brake as Dr. Henry Augustus Wolfgang, Sylvester McCoy as Igor, Catherine Schell as Zoya Krupp, and Jorge Garcia as Floop. Elvira has been rumored to appear in a mystery role and it’s unclear who may be playing Eddie and Marilyn Munster.

Plot details haven’t been revealed but what we know is that the film serves as an homage to the classic sitcom and will be filled with references and Easter eggs. Zombie has teased some of these in the past, such as the revelation that Herman’s “Hot Rod Herman” jacket will be making a special appearance. Zombie has also been meticulous in recreating the Munster family home to look just as it did in the classic show, all a part of the filmmaker’s plan to make the perfect Munsters adaptation.

The Munsters Reboot Will Bring On the Comedy

We’ve had some hints that The Munsters would be more comedy and less horror, similar to the classic sitcom and less like Rob Zombie’s other movies. Dan Roebuck, who plays Grandpa in the movie, had spoken out about how the goal they all had was to get audiences walking away feeling entertained with the experience. If all goes well, they may follow it up with more movies.

“I really hope audiences walk away feeling entertained and laughing,” Roebuck told Horror Geek Life. “That’s all we really hope for making any movie, well, unless it’s a drama. If all goes well and people really like, maybe we’ll get the chance to do it again. I just hope people realize that they’ll have a whole new version of The Munsters that can live and co-exist side-by-side with the original version of The Munsters. No one wants to replace it, we all love it so much. We just want to shine a spotlight on it with our approach which I think is the best way to look at it.”

The Munsters will be released sometime in 2022 on both Peacock and in theaters.
