The Marvel SDCC panel revealed a huge change coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will send shockwaves through the entire fandom. Avengers 5 finally receives a new title and will be called Avengers: Doomsday, but surprisingly, that is not the biggest piece of news to come from the panel. That honor goes to the reveal that Doctor Doom is coming to the MCU and will be played by Robert Downey Jr.
Yes, Iron Man actor Downey Jr. will be finally making his return to the Marvel Universe, but as one of the franchise’s biggest antagonists. As the Secret Wars movie brings the entire Multiverse Saga to a close, it seems that one of its original stars will be around to see it happen – but he won’t be fighting for the good guys.
The Next Two Avengers Movies Will Take Place in Phase Six of the MCU
The Avengers movies have been huge for the MCU, with the likes of Avengers: Infinity War making a monstrous $2.048 billion at the global box office, with Avengers: Endgame going even bigger and grossing $2.799 billion worldwide. Whatever else is going on with the MCU, audiences clearly cannot resist heading to the theater to watch their favorite heroes share the big screen.

There are many big cameo appearances from Marvel stars past and present in Deadpool & Wolverine, but one OG Avenger returned for one reason.
However, while the previous Avengers outings featured the likes of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner/Hulk, the Doomsday roster is currently unknown, and Marvel boss Kevin Feige has said we should not expect to see every hero in the next sequel.
“I rarely speak in absolutes like that, right? The notion of never ever seeing somebody again, we’ve got Tim Blake Nelson in a movie coming up next year, right? So I never talk in absolutes like that. But the truth is, you know, we’re going to tell a story in these Avengers movies, and there won’t be room for 100,000 characters in it. So choices will have to be made, that’s for sure. But that doesn’t mean you won’t ever see anybody ever again.”
Avengers: Doomsday is due to be released on May 1, 2026, and will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027, as part of Phase Six of the MCU. Phase Five is still underway, with Deadpool & Wolverine now in theaters.
