According to Variety, Alien: Romulus takes viewers deep into space with a team of explorers who discover a forsaken space station. It’s not long before they encounter the infamous residents of the Alien universe: facehuggers and Xenomorphs. The footage shown featured the group navigating through crumbling environments, with the tension palpably building until it culminates in the series’ signature gruesome scenes—bones cracking and blood spilling as the creatures make their violent emergence.

New Faces, Classic Thrills in Alien: Romulus with Cailee Spaeny Leading

Leading the cast is Cailee Spaeny, whose rising star has been cemented with performances in Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla and Alex Garland’s Civil War. She is joined by Archie Renaux, known for Upgraded, and Isabela Merced of Superman and The Last of Us fame. This new ensemble of actors brings a fresh dynamic to the franchise, promising to draw both longstanding fans and new audiences.

For Spaeny, one of the most daunting tasks is following in the footsteps of Sigourney Weaver’s iconic Ellen Ripley. In an interview with Total Film, Spaeny discussed a scene from the trailer where her character grips a pulse rifle, bracing for an imminent encounter with one of the lurking creatures. Spaeny said:

“I definitely did everything that I could to bring that character to life.
Watching Sigourney play that role – she’s part of the changing of the game that those films did. I could never be her.
But I injected whatever I have in me into that character, and tried to make it three-dimensional – as three-dimensional as possible. So I hope that that’s there, and it comes alive.”

Behind the Scenes with Fede Álvarez on the Set of Alien: Romulus

Walt Disney Studios

In a revealing interview with Variety, director Fede Álvarez shared insights into the making of “Romulus.” Álvarez, known for his hands-on approach, shared the unique challenge of crafting a film within such a storied franchise. He explained how the advice from predecessors Scott and Cameron resonated with him: to succeed, one must immerse deeply in every aspect of the production.

True to this ethos, Álvarez was actively involved in everything from shooting complex VFX sequences to working closely with the puppeteering team that brought the film’s dreadful aliens to life. Álvarez shared:

“For the creatures, we brought in all the guys from Aliens. They were in their early twenties when they made Aliens, and they were a part of Stan Winston’s [special effects] team.
And now we had them at the top of their game. They have their own shops, and so we brought them all together to work on all the creatures, because we went with all animatronics and puppets at every level.
I even got the chance to be under the table with them, puppeteering all these animatronics.”

Alien: Romulus is set to premiere on August 16, 2024.

Álvarez’s commitment to blending practical effects with cutting-edge technology promises to deliver a visceral experience that respects the franchise’s roots while charting new territory.
