The Princess Diaries is one of the great classics of Disney’s live-action movies. The first film, released in 2001, was a complete success and helped launch the careers of several of its stars such as Anne Hathaway and Mandy Moore. The second, which hit theaters in 2004, was just as popular.
The development of a third part to continue the story has been rumored for several years now, and last year Disney finally confirmed it. However, the sequel may not include some of its original cast, even when Hathaway herself has repeatedly expressed her desire to once again don the crown of Amelia Mignonette Thermopólis Renaldi, Queen of Genovia.
The main star, however, has made it clear that she would only return if her co-star Julie Andrews does as well, and the veteran actress was not very supportive of the idea of a continuation. The one that does seem willing to return is Sandra Oh.
The Golden Globe winner was recently approached by Entertainment Weekly about The Princess Diaries 3 and whether she’d be up for it:
“I am ready for the Queen. Call me! I’m dying to see how Gupta has moved up in the world.”
Oh was part of the first installment of the saga playing the Vice Principal of the school where Mia attends, Gupta, who does everything in her power so that the then Queen Clarisse feels comfortable in her institution.

What to Expect from The Princess Diaries 3
Walt Disney Pictures
In the first film, Mia is an ordinary girl who is suddenly surprised by her grandmother’s presence in her life. However, the old woman is not only looking for her to rebuild a bond with her granddaughter years after her father’s death, she also finds her because Mia is the heir to the throne of Genovia, and she has to prepare her to occupy that place, something that at the beginning the young woman does not want.
The second installment begins with Mia already preparing in Genovia for her eventual appointment as Queen, for which she has to find a husband since the law stipulates that she must be married to occupy the throne. Meanwhile, another possible heir appears, Nicholas (Chris Pine), whom his uncle proposes as Mia’s main opponent.
But the two heirs to the throne end up falling in love while appearing to be enemies, and in the end he declines the throne and the law changes so that Mia can wear the crown.
The Princess Diaries 3 could follow Mia’s life as queen of Genovia, either with Nicholas, alone or with a new partner. It could also have the queen preparing the future heir to the throne, her son or daughter. But, in case Hathaway does not return, it could happen that the film is more like a reboot and has a new protagonist living a story similar to Mia’s.
Disney is currently also working on another long-awaited sequel from one of its most popular live-actions movies, Freaky Friday, with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis set to return as the main stars.
