Scream VI Ghostface Will be Bolder, Brazen & Bloodier

Slasher sequel Scream VI will introduce a much more aggressive Ghostface, say directors Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin.

The upcoming slasher sequel Scream VI will introduce a far more aggressive Ghostface than ever before, with this latest iteration of the infamous killer far “bolder” and more “brazen.” So bold and brazen, in fact, that he will have no qualms about wielding guns and attacking his victims in front of large crowds. As Scream VI director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin explains it…

“We wanted to make this really different, while still having all the stuff you love. Having a bolder, more brazen Ghostface was a big part of that.”

These very public kills have already been teased in the recent trailer for Scream VI, with Ghostface looking far more hostile and far less concerned about hiding and secrecy than he has been so far in the franchise. As well as these terrifying details regarding the new Ghostface, director Tyler Gillett reveals to Total Film that Scream VI was actually written before the release of 2022’s Scream, allowing the sequel to “confidently be what it is.”

“It really moves like it’s on rocket fuel. You sit down, it starts, and the movie is just a ride. You get off two hours later, and you feel like you haven’t taken a breath.”

The Scream franchise will undergo a significant change of scenery in Scream VI, shifting the serial killer and his horrifying antics from the Californian town of Woodsboro to New York, New York. Scream VI will follow the four survivors of the Ghostface killings in last year’s Scream as they leave Woodsboro, hoping to start a fresh chapter in the Big Apple. But, sadly, their hopes will quickly be dashed when someone new begins sporting the Ghostface mask and tormenting them all once again.

Scream VI will see several cast members from the recent reboot reprise their roles, including Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter, Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin. The rest of the supporting cast includes the likes of Dermot Mulroney, Henry Czerny, Samara Weaving, Tony Revolori, Jack Champion, Devyn Nekoda, Liana Liberato, and Josh Segarra, with Courtney Cox reprising the role of series staple Gale Weathers alongside Hayden Panettiere, who returns as Scream 4 survivor Kirby Reed.

One character that will not return, however, is Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott. While initially being part of the story, Campbell decided not to join the sixth Scream outing after deeming the offer too low. “Sadly I won’t be making the next Scream film. As a woman I have had to work extremely hard in my career to establish my value, especially when it comes to Scream. I felt the offer that was presented to me did not equate to the value I have brought to the franchise,” Campbell said.

“It’s been a very difficult decision to move on,” she added. “To all my Scream fans, I love you. You’ve always been so incredibly supportive to me. I’m forever grateful to you and to what this franchise has given me over the past 25 years.”

Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, Scream VI is scheduled to be released on Mar. 10.
