Warning: The Following Contains Spoilers for Severance Season 2, Episode 10, “Cold Harbor”The Season 2 finale of Severance brought its sophomore run to a close with a surprisingly bloody ending and some truly shocking twists that even Gemma’s Apple TV+ show Outie, actress Dichen Lachman, found “heartbreaking.” One of those moments came at the episode’s close when Innie Mark S. (Adam Scott) had to decide whether to escape through the exit door with his Outie’s wife Gemma after successfully rescuing her from the testing floor and navigating her to safety, or whether to run off into the proverbial sunset with Helly R. (Britt Lower), who he has formed an emotional bond with during office hours. After an agonizing wait, the episode ends with Mark and Helly galloping through the halls of Lumon Industries while Gemma is tragically left on the outside looking in.
Lachman told TVLine in a recent interview that she found the situation as tragic as seemingly everyone else watching the episode at home and screaming at the television, but shared a little more insight into her character’s mindset during that moment. “My feeling was she was piecing together that he had gone through this procedure because Mark would never do that,” she explained, adding that Gemma is likely still “hoping and praying that she can get through to either his Innie or his Outie to come out with her.” Lachman also acknowledged that viewers may have felt conflicted about the decision after simultaneously witnessing Mark and Gemma’s backstory unfold and Mark and Helly’s romance evolve, saying those rooting for the latter may have found “they’re a little bit torn.”

If the ‘Severance’ Season 1 Finale Made You Angry, Then You’ll Really Hate the Season 2 Finale
The first season finale of ‘Severance’ left fans angered, and Season 2 will conjure up similar feelings.
This isn’t the only conflicting situation in the finale, as Gemma herself faces a disconcerting decision when Outie Mark finally reunites with her in the Cold Harbor room. She doesn’t recognize him, but Mark has already been through the wringer following a ferocious and ultimately fatal face-off with Mr. Drummond (Darri Ólafsson), and he is not about to turn his back on Gemma now. He urges her to leave with him, as Dr. Mauer (Robby Benson) orders her to stay in the room. While Mark is nothing more than a man in a blood-soaked shirt at this point, she opts to go with him. Lachman theorizes that the choice Gemma makes is based on instinct and that there could be some internal influence from the Outie world, even though they are severed from it.
“I think all of the Innies have parts of their Outies. There are things that they feel that they don’t quite know how to explain… On some level, all of Gemma’s little Innies would probably have this instinct to trust Mark, even though they have no recollection of who he is or their relationship.”
‘Severance’ Has “So Many Possibilities” When It Clocks Back in for Season 3
Apple TV+
The climactic final moments of Severance Season 2 were soon followed by choreography and merriment as Apple announced that the acclaimed workplace thriller, created by Dan Erickson, had been renewed for a third season. It’s not clear when it will be back on our screens, but Stiller has already assured fans that there will not be a three-year gap between seasons like there was with Season 1 (released in 2022) and Season 2 (premiering in January this year). According to reports, a writers’ room is already underway, as the minds behind the hit series work to provide even more answers to the new questions that have arisen out of the most recent episode.
Lachman admitted to TVLine that “there are so many possibilities” for Gemma’s storyline heading into Season 3, especially considering what we learn about the mysterious and important work the Macrodata Refinement department (MDR) has been tasked with. Mark sorted 25 files during his time on the floor, with Cold Harbor being the final one. Each file has created a new Innie personality for Gemma, but the implications of that are yet to be seen. Lachman said she asked Erikson about Gemma’s Innies but “Dan just kind of raised his eyebrows” at her. This response seems to suggest we will be seeing much more from Gemma in the future — perhaps it’s her world now, and we’re just living in it.
