Summary

  • Stephen King praised Spanish horror film
    The Coffee Table
    as “horrible and horribly funny.”
  • The movie follows a couple who purchase a cursed coffee table, leading to tragic consequences.
  • While dark and disturbing,
    The Coffee Table
delivers authentic performances and has gained praise.

One of the great things about following Stephen King on social media is getting to see the master of horrors’ take on some of the genre’s newest films. As someone who has been in the game for the last 50 years, and has had more than 50 of his stories turned into movies, King has more than deserved his right to comment on both the good and the bad. He was recently at it again, this time offering praise to a film that’s mostly flown under the radar in the mainstream, that being the little know Spanish horror gem, The Coffee Table.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), King had nothing but positive things to say about The Coffee Table, which is directed by Caye Casas, and stars Josep Riera, David Pareja, Estefanía de los Santos, and Claudia Riera. He called it “horrible and also horribly funny,” while at the same time guessing that his followers have “never seen a movie as black as this one.” Check out his post below.

The premise behind The Coffee Table seems fairly innocuous. A couple that are going through a rough patch in their relationship decide to have a baby, and hopefully start things anew. To help mold their life as parents, they bundle up their newborn to go furniture shopping, purchasing a coffee table that supposedly features unbreakable glass. It’s a decision that has irreparable consequences, and forever changes their lives.

It sounds harmless, but director Caye Casas has crafted a disturbing and tragic film that is not for the faint of heart. It’s raw, bleak, and pushes the boundaries of acceptable taste, while at the same time delivering authentic and emotional performances from the cast. Originally premiering in 2022 at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, The Coffee Table made its way to North America on April 19, 2024, when it debuted on Prime Video as a VOD rental or purchase. Since then, droplets of praise have fallen here and there on social media, but with Stephen King giving it his nod of approval, it’s hopeful that those droplets will soon turn into a downpour.

There’s no doubt that King watches a lot of movies and TV shows, as is evident by some of his most recent recommendations. A few of the films and series that he’s shared his thoughts on include the French horror film, Infested, the Netflix hits 3 Body Problem, and Baby Reindeer, as well as the Blumhouse theatrical flop, Night Swim.

Speaking on Infested, he called the film by director Sébastien Vaniček (who has recently been tapped to direct an Evil Dead spin-off), “scary, gross, and well-made.” In regard to Night Swim, while audiences may not have been kind to the film, King said “It’s like a lost, low-budget Steven Spielberg film from Spielberg’s early period…say, after DUEL but before JAWS.” High praise, indeed.

Related Salem’s Lot Remake Skipping Theaters For Streaming On Max The remake of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot was originally slated for a 2022 Labor Day weekend theatrical release but will now debut on Max.

When it comes to Netflix, King called the recent adaptation 3 Body Problem “extraordinary science fiction.” As for the controversial series Baby Reindeer, the 76-year-old author had two words to say: “Holy sh*t.

While it’s been almost a year since the release of the King adaptation of The Boogeyman, fans can look forward to finally seeing the latest incarnation of Salem’s Lotwhen it hits MAX later this year. His next theatrical release will be The Life of Chuck by director Mike Flanagan, who has previously helmed the film versions of King’s Gerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep. No release date has been set, as the film is currently in post-production.
