The Batman Director Says Catwoman Spinoff Talks Have Happened at HBO Max

We might be getting a whole lot more of Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle after Gotham’s most efficient cat burglar is first introduced in The Batman next month. With the film set in a standalone universe unconnected to the DCEU, it introduces all-new incarnations of its characters. The goal of director Matt Reeves is to launch a new cinematic universe with The Batman getting plenty of its own sequels and spinoffs.

It was previously reported that there are at least two spinoff shows connected to The Batman that are already in development for streaming at HBO Max. One show will follow the officers of Gotham City’s police department, but it’s unclear if it will feature Jeffrey Wright’s Jim Gordon or any other characters that appear in the film. Colin Farrell has also signed on to star in his own Penguin spinoff series as Oswald Cobblepot, the supervillain he’ll first appear as in The Batman.

While speaking at a recent press conference to promote The Batman, Reeves revealed another major character that might get a spinoff series. Per CBR, the director was specifically asked if there might be a spinoff for Zoe Kravitz’s Selina Kyle in the cards. Reeves provided a very optimistic response, divulging that such talks have already happened at HBO Max, and that he definitely wants Selena in particular to have her story extended beyond what happens in The Batman. For now, however, it seems like Warner Bros. will wait to see how The Batman performs before committing to a third spinoff.

“I’ve talked to the HBO Max folks. What we’re really trying to do is to launch this world. If the world embraces this, we have a lot of ideas for things we want to do, and for sure we want Selena to continue.”

There will be a heavy focus on Catwoman in The Batman, as has been made apparent by the sneak peeks and trailers. Bruce Wayne actor Robert Pattinson has also spoken about the connection the two characters have in the film, carrying over the traditional “friend or foe?” relationship the two often have in various Batman stories. This puts both Batman and Catwoman out of balance in the film.

“They have quite a strong connection pretty quickly, and I think they’re both trying to ignore that,” Pattinson told EW. “They’re both very surprised by feeling a connection with somebody because that’s quite rare for them. It puts both of us out of our comfort zone.”

He added, “Bruce created Batman in this very binary worldview where he [believes] there are bad guys and there are victims. Selina comes along, and he’s like, ‘Well, you’re a thief. You’re basically the same as the Penguin,’ and yet… there’s something in her I recognize. It’s going up against his snap judgment.”

The Batman will be released in movie theaters on March 4, 2022. Matt Reeves directs the film using a screenplay co-written with Peter Craig. Along with Pattinson and Kravitz, the film stars Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, Jeffrey Wright, and Paul Dano as The Riddler.
