The Batman Trilogy Has Been Discussed by Robert Pattinson and Matt Reeves

The cast of The Batman would love to come back for more adventures in Gotham City, with star Robert Pattinson saying that he would “do this for as many times as people want to see it.” Pattinson was joined by co-stars Zoe Kravitz and Paul Dano, with the trio revealing to Fandango that there is plenty of room for more stories beyond The Batman. Pattinson even revealed that he and director Matt Reeves have already discussed making a trilogy.

“It was fun doing it, I’m down to do this for as many times as people want to see it, really. I’ve gotta get this one out, first! I’ve talked to Matt [Reeves] about the idea of doing a trilogy. I know it’d be wonderful. I really enjoyed the process. It’s such a fun character to play. That’d be lovely.”

Paul Dano, who will torment Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne as the villainous Edward Nashton AKA The Riddler, added, “There’s so much room for this Batman to grow.”

The Batman will introduce audiences to an early version of The Dark Knight. Two years into his career as a costumed crime-fighter, Bruce Wayne will spend the movie finding his footing and working out how best to attack crime in Gotham City. The wounds that have damaged Bruce will still be very raw, with Pattinson recently revealing some insight into his depiction of the reclusive billionaire. “He doesn’t have a playboy persona at all, so he’s kind of a weirdo as Bruce and a weirdo as Batman, and I kept thinking there’s a more nihilistic slant to it. ‘Cause, normally, in all the other movies, Bruce goes away, trains, and returns to Gotham believing in himself, thinking, I’m gonna change things here. But in this, it’s sort of implied that he’s had a bit of a breakdown.”

This approach should give Bruce Wayne a lot of room to grow and evolve, with the character to likely emerge from the events of The Batman a much stronger, more familiar version of the DC superhero.

The Batman Will Lay the Foundations for a Follow-Up

Warner Bros. Pictures

Robert Pattinson has teased the various clues and hints that The Batman will leave behind, each of which will tease further adventures. “When I saw it the first time, even from the first shot, it does feel incredibly different, tonally, to the other movies. And it’s so strange, and kind of… It’s sad, and quite touching,” the actor said. “It’s a really, really unusual Batman story, and it almost seems harder for me to imagine it being a series afterwards. I mean, they always have that little bit at the end, that’s like: ‘…and coming up!’ But other than that, it feels strangely personal. I think people will be quite shocked at how different it is.”

So, while Pattinson feels that The Batman perfectly well as a standalone story, it being a comic book movie makes a subsequent franchise almost inevitable. Of course, it has already been confirmed that The Batman will spark its own universe, with several spinoffs now being planned, including Gotham P.D. which will focus on a younger version of James Gordon.

The Batman is scheduled to premiere in New York City on March 1, 2022, and will be theatrically released on March 4.
