Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow Returns to Theaters for 25th Anniversary

Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow Returns to Theaters for 25th Anniversary

Heads are gonna roll this October! 25 years after its initial release, Tim Burton‘s Sleepy Hollow is returning to the big screen – and not a moment too soon, as the director is making a bit of a comeback with the recent release and box office success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Sleepy Hollow is being re-released in theaters on Oct. 13 and Oct. 16, with tickets available via the Paramount Scares website. The re-release is brought to you by Paramount Scares and Fangoria, which is putting Sleepy Hollow under the Scream Greats label just in time for Spooky Season! You can check out the announcement below, which also showcases a brand-new poster for the film’s 25th anniversary.

Sleepy Hollow Features a Stellar Ensemble Cast

Directed by Burton and loosely based on Washington Irving’s 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the film follows the eccentric Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp), a police constable tasked with traveling to New York City to investigate a series of mysterious murders in the village of Sleepy Hollow that are being committed by a Headless Horseman (Ray Park and Christopher Walken). The film also stars Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Casper Van Dien, Jeffrey Jones, Christopher Lee, Richard Griffiths, Ian McDiarmid, and Michael Gough.

Paramount Pictures began developing the film back in 1993 before Burton became attached. Special-effects vet Kevin Yagher was originally set to direct a more low-budget version of the film from a screenplay by Andrew Kevin Walker of Se7en fame. When creative differences emerged between the studio and Yagher, the latter was ousted from the director’s chair and reassigned to work as the film’s prosthetic makeup designer. Burton was ultimately chosen to direct the film in 1998.

Sleepy Hollow was released on Nov. 19, 1999, to solid reviews and impressive box office. The film registered a 70 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning raves for its visual flair and Burton’s signature creepy atmosphere. The film is notable box office-wise for being one of the first major mainstream hits for Johnny Depp before he achieved even greater box office supremacy with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. Sleepy Hollow ultimately grossed $101 million domestically and $207 million worldwide on a reported $100 million budget.
