Trailer Drops for Debut Graphic Novel, Mother Nature, from Jamie Lee Curtis

Trans activist and scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis, whose name has been synonymous with horror since her initial appearance as Laurie Strode in 1978’s Halloween, is teaming up with filmmaker Russell Goldman and artist Karl Stevens to bring fans her first graphic novel, Mother Nature. Curtis’ debut graphic novel is due to be published by Titan this summer.

Mother Nature’s official synopsis reads:

After witnessing her engineer father die in mysterious circumstances on one of the Cobalt Corporation’s experimental oil extraction projects, Nova Terrell has grown up to hate the seemingly benevolent company that the town of Catch Creek, New Mexico, relies on for its livelihood and, thanks to the ‘Mother Nature’ project, its clean water. Haunted by her father’s death, the rebellious Nova wages a campaign of sabotage and vandalism on the oil giant’s facilities and equipment, until one night she accidentally makes a terrifying discovery about the true nature of the ‘Mother Nature’ project and the malevolent, long-dormant horror it has awakened, and that threatens to destroy them all.

Solicited as 176-page full-color hardcover graphic novel set for a market release of July 2023, Mother Nature is an eco-horror story adapted from a forthcoming Curtis and Goldman penned film script from Blumhouse and Comet Pictures. Curtis is said to be eyeing the director’s chair herself. The first time Oscar-nominee (for Everything Everywhere All At Once) isn’t new to writing, although this is her first foray into graphic novels and comics. Curtis has written children’s books since 1993 and was a blogger with The Huffington Post from 2011 to 2017.

In a statement made by Curtis in a press release, The Haunted Mansion star explained that she’s been working on the story for many years:

I first thought about this story when I was 19 years old. I’ve always been aware of the very unbalanced relationship between humans and nature, and even though I was young, I always knew that, inevitably, nature would win. I have long admired and collected Karl’s work, and I’m very excited he suggested expanding the idea to turn it into a graphic novel. The partnership with Titan has now given us a wonderful platform to begin to tell our story.

Cartoonist Karl Stevens ‘Blown Away’ by Mother Nature’s Depth

Karl Stevens/Titan

Stevens, who is the cartoonist behind Penny: A Graphic Memoir, said that he was blown away by the depth of the characters in Curtis’ debut graphic novel. “I was immediately blown away by the depth of the characters, the perfect blend of action and gore, the urgent ecological message, and how all these things would translate beautifully into a graphic novel,” Stevens is quoted as saying in the press release. “It’s a joy and privilege to work with Titan Comics and Blumhouse on this project. I’m producing the best work of my career!”

Following the official announcement, Stevens also tweeted out some work-in-progress images of the upcoming comic.
