  • Ryan Reynolds Says X-Men Origins: Wolverine Was a Trash Fire Because of Hugh Jackman

Ryan Reynolds never misses an opportunity to take a swipe at his Deadpool 3 co-star Hugh Jackman, this time taking aim at X-Men Origins: Wolverine

When it comes to a list of the worst superhero movies of the last 30 years, among the less than heroic group would be a handful of X-Men movies including X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The first movie to give Jackman a solo run out as Wolverine, the 2009 film was also notable for bring the first to bring Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson aka Deadpool to the big screen, but it was such an ill-judged even that Reynolds used Deadpool 2’s post credits scene to “go back and fix it.” Now Reynolds has made it clear where things went wrong with the heavily criticized movie – it was all because of Hugh Jackman.

By some genuine twist of fate, Reynolds and Jackman will soon be teaming up together as Deadpool and Wolverine in Deadpool 3, and it is fair to say they have come a long way in the last decade. However, with their never-ending Twitter “war”, it is not surprising that Reynolds wants to let everyone know that he doesn’t take any responsibility at all for how their first movie outing panned out. He told Variety:

“Everyone’s expecting me to eviscerate Hugh Jackman but I will say he was one of the first movie stars I ever worked with, back in 2007, on an absolute trash fire called ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ — that one was on him.”

There are many movies that bring with them high levels of expectation. Avengers; Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Zack Snyder’s Justice League are just a few examples in recent years. Some pay off, others don’t. In November 2024, Deadpool 3 will join that group of movies and for many fans there is no possible way it could fail to satisfy with its combination of the Marvel multiverse, variants of Wolverine and Reynolds’ title character with the entire world of Disney to reference in all his R-rated glory.

The film is certainly a “full circle” kind of affair, and currently there is no idea what the new movie will mean for the characters going forward. For Jackman, this will likely be the very last time he plays Wolverine, but for Reynolds, the Deadpool bandwagon could continue to roll on for a few more years. Reynolds previously discussed the challenge of getting this epic collaboration just right. He said:

“I think it’s a tightrope walk. I mean most of these movies are always a tightrope walk of tone, so in this instance, though, you have a collision of two pretty iconic characters that exist in the Marvel Ancillary Universe [laughs] — we’re in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at this point. It’s really kind of finding a way to service both of these characters that feels extraordinarily authentic to each of them, and I think these two wrongs actually will make a right in a pretty great way.”

Directed by Shawn Levy and written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, Deadpool 3 is currently slated to be released on November 8, 2024.
