‘You’ Is Netflix’s Number 1 Show, but Audiences Slam Series Finale on Rotten Tomatoes

‘You’ Is Netflix’s Number 1 Show, but Audiences Slam Series Finale on Rotten Tomatoes

When You

dropped its fifth and final season on April 25, Netflix

subscribers rushed to hear Joe Goldberg’s signature inner monologue one more time and find out how his story would come to an end. That has sent the story of the obsessive serial killer straight back to the number one spot on Netflix’s U.S and global charts. However, the series has also followed another trend – in becoming a disappointing ending to a series just like so many others.

Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) first entered the lives of audiences in 2018, when his deadly pursuit of love worked a charm on both audiences and critics. The first season delivered a near-perfect 94% Tomatometer score, and strong 82% Popcornmeter rating. Naturally it did not take long for Joe to return for more outlandish antics across several more seasons, crossing paths with one Jenna Ortega on her rise to stardom (obviously in real-life and not as a plotline), coming up against his own female counterpart, has been driven to kill by people who weren’t really there, and so many other escalating storylines.

Joe Goldberg is back for the fifth and final season of ‘You’ on Netflix. But with the passage of two years between seasons, you probably need a recap.

Although fans have stuck with the series, the returns have been diminishing in terms of audience response season on season, leading to Season 5 delivering the first “rotten” score of the series, and leaving many with the same sense of disappointment felt with shows like Game of Thrones. Currently, the fifth season has a score of 56%, which, as can be seen below, is another downgrade from its predecessor.

There has always been a huge difference between critical scores and those of viewers, but even reviewers downgraded the series’ conclusion compared to the fairly consistent run of scores for previous seasons. The real question is: what when wrong?

‘You’ Loses Its Sharp Edge in a Dull Final Season

Netflix, Lifetime

In their write-ups, reviewers praised showrunner Sera Gamble’s “full-circle” structure, and, of course, Badgley’s ability to play the show’s central character with every bit of cute sincerity and dark calculation that has made Joe Goldberg such an interesting and endearing creation. However, the biggest complaint about Season 5 of You is that not a great deal happens, and what does is not quick in coming. Some reviews say that the series should have wrapped with Season 4, while others called it a “leaky boat being dragged through mud.”

Other reviews were not quite as critical, but most agreed that it was time for the series to be put to bed, as Joe’s antics began to feel “repetitive” and just like “going through the motions.” All in all, while the show will post strong viewer numbers as morbid curiosity lead subscribers to find out how Joe’s story comes to its conclusion, it seems that many of those who have followed the show over the last seven years and five seasons might not find much satisfaction in how it all ends.
