A whole new body of work

Normani has teased the possibility of a new full-length album in 2025, saying she is working on a “whole new body of work”.

The pop/R&B star and former Fifth Harmony singer released her debut solo album ‘Dopamine’ in June this year, including the singles ‘Wild Side’, ‘1:59’ and ‘Candy Paint’.

Now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Normani has given a sneak preview of what fans can expect from her in the New Year and she gave an enticing teaser that there might be a follow-up to ‘Dopamine’ earlier than some had expected.

Answering a question about her 2025 aspirations, she said: “Putting lots more music out, festivals, and a tour. Leave it to me to put out a new album too, a whole new body of work. I promised I wouldn’t make you guys wait that long anymore! I’m just putting things out and moving more this year, as opposed to preparation.”

She followed up by speaking about her current inspirations. “Life,” she replied. “I’m experiencing so much in such a short period that I feel like I have a lot to talk about. Dopamine was curated over four to five years, so it’s a lot of things that I had been through, but present day, I still have so much happening currently that I want to be able to talk about and share and get off just for myself.”

In a four-star review of ‘Dopamine’, NME wrote: “In interviews, she’s attributed the LP’s lengthy gestation to personal issues – in recent years, she’s supported both of her parents through cancer treatment – and to a musical identity crisis. “I know what it feels like to be in a position to put out records that I don’t believe in,” Normani said in February.”

“‘Dopamine’ also contains a skittering duet with James Blake, ‘Tantrums’, on which Normani delivers one of the album’s punchiest lyrics: “You’re nobody – you’re just somebody I used to fuck from time to time.” It’s typical of an album that shimmers with a cool, calm and yes, unhurried confidence. It may have taken six years, but ‘Dopamine’ sounds like the (damn) album Normani was meant to make all long.”

Normani was forced to pull out of her show at the BET Awards in June because of an injury.

The following month, she was called out by Tayla Parx for not crediting her on the album, despite saying she helped create the song ‘Insomnia’.
