Charli XCX has revealed that she wrote some new music for Britney Spears, but said it was never recorded.
Late last year, it was reported that the singer-songwriter was working on material for Spears’ comeback album – the pop star’s first since 2016’s ‘Glory’. Charli had previously penned songs for Spears’ 2013 record ‘Britney Jean’, although none made the cut.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, the ‘Von Dutch’ artist confirmed that she had written something new for Spears.
“It leaked to the press. Britney then did this post where she was like, ‘I don’t have random people write for me’,” Charli explained. “And I was like, ‘Oh. OK. Go off’. So I don’t know that she was a part of the process.
“So I did get asked but I don’t know if it’s like… real? I went to Malibu and I wrote. And you always write songs hoping Britney’s gonna record them because she’s the queen of pop.”
She continued: “The team were present… But she didn’t record it. She obviously didn’t.”
Charli went on to call the idea of Spears recording any of her songs “a dream come true”. You can watch the full interview in the video above.
Following the reports of Charli working on new music for Spears, the latter took to social media to say that she would “never return to the music industry”.
“Just so we’re clear most of the news is trash,” she began.
“They keep saying I’m turning to random people to do a new album. I will never return to the music industry!!! When I write, I write for fun or I write for other people!!!”
In 2022, Spears made her musical comeback with her Elton John collaboration, ‘Hold Me Closer’. In 2023, she also released ‘Mind Your Business’ alongside will.i.am, and released her memoir, The Woman In Me, which detailed her childhood experiences, career, relationships and 13-year conservatorship.
Spears’ conservatorship under her father, Jamie, ended in late 2021. Last month, the singer claimed there was “no justice” after being left to foot the bill of $2million in legal fees following her conservatorship battle.
Charli also spoke about her hopes of one day collaborating with Spears in 2014.
“Oh my God, if she hit me up I would be so down,” she explained at the time. “I’m an endless fan of Britney Spears. She massively inspired me when I was younger and still now.”
In other news, Charli XCX has announced a UK arena tour with Shygirl for later this year. The shows will follow the release of her sixth studio album, ‘Brat’, next month. Watch NME‘s recent video interview above.
