New ‘Batman’ game set in film universe reportedly being made

A new Batman game is reportedly in the works, set in the same universe as Matt Reeves’ The Batman.

The DC Universe had a major shake-up in 2022, with James Gunn and Peter Safran becoming the co-chairman of DC Studios. After rebooting almost every property, the plan is for an interconnected world of TV, film and video games, while projects outside of the main DC Universe will be released under the banner DC Elseworlds.

Those include Todd Phillips’ Joker and its upcoming sequel, alongside The Batman, which stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. A HBO spin-off focusing on The Penguin from that universe is due for release next month, but a new report suggests a video game is also in the works.

In a new article by Puck speculating about which Warner Bros. Discovery properties could be sold off in the near future, it’s mentioned that the company is unlikely to sell off the games division because it is still too valuable.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav “still sees the games unit as strategic, especially as the various WBD divisions are beginning to collaborate more closely on properties like the upcoming Penguin HBO show and game, both seeded in the 2022 The Batman movie,” the article states, seemingly confirming the existence of a Penguin game.

However, earlier this year another Batman TV show was cancelled. The series was originally set to focus on the corrupt police force of Gotham City after events of The Batman, before it was retooled into being about Arkham Asylum in the main DC universe. It was reported that HBO has decided to not move ahead with the project, but a different take on the idea could be developed further down the line.

Batman was last seen in Rocksteady Studios’ Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. The game was met with a flood of negative reviews and Warner Bros. later admitted that the title had not met their expectations. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the next game in the beloved Batman: Arkham series will be a Meta Quest 3 VR headset exclusive.

In other news, Xbox users are still waiting on release details for Black Myth Wukong, despite the game already launching for PlayStation and PC.
