The Academy (Oscars) has announced a new award category for stunt design – find out more below.
Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy, and Academy President Janet Yang made the announcement last night (April 10), saying in a joint statement: “Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking.”
The continued: “We are proud to honour the innovative work of these technical and creative artists, and we congratulate them for their commitment and dedication in reaching this momentous occasion.”
As such, the Achievement in Stunt Design award has been introduced to the Oscars, and will make its debut at the annual ceremony beginning in 2028, where it will honour stunt work in films from 2027.

According to a press release from the Academy, “category rules for eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be announced in 2027 with the complete 100th Academy Awards Rules. The specifics of the award’s presentation will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and executive leadership at a future date.”
The Achievement in Stunt Design award is now the latest award category to be introduced to the Oscars. A new Achievement in Casting category was introduced in 2024, and will make its debut at the 2026 ceremony, honouring casting in films from this year.
The 97th Academy Awards – or 2025 Oscars – took place earlier in March, with Anora walking away with the coveted Best Picture award. The film’s director Sean Baker also took home the award for Best Director and lead actress Mikey Maddison took home the trophy for Best Actress.
