‘Stranger Things’ star Finn Wolfhard says the show “couldn’t have ended better”

Stranger Things‘ final run of episodes “couldn’t have ended better,” according to series star Finn Wolfhard – see what he had to say below.

Ahead of Stranger Things‘ fifth and final season premiering on Netflix this year, – a firm release date has yet to be announced – series co-lead Finn Wolfhard spoke to Variety about his experience filming the last collection of episodes.

Wolfhard, who has been working on the beloved series for a decade – filming began in 2015, while season one premiered in 2016 – was just 12 years old when he was first cast for the project. Wolfhard reflected on his “whole childhood” revolving around the series and filming the final season: “It was incredibly emotional, obviously. It’s the last 10 years of my life. Also for the creators, the Duffer Bros. started when they were 30 and now they are 40.”

“Everyone had a long journey and shared it together. My whole childhood was there. It was sort of the Toy Story 3 moment of leaving your toys behind. It was really special.”

He went on to share that filming season five was a year-long process, which wrapped in December: “We had a long last year. We shot sort of Lord of the Rings style with a year-long shoot. It was a great way to go out and very intense. I feel like it couldn’t have ended better.”

Meanwhile, Netflix revealed the episode titles for season five back in November: The Crawl, The Vanishing Of, The Turnbow Trap, Sorcerer, Shock Jock, Escape From Camazotz, The Bridge and The Rightside Up.

While Netflix and Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers have largely kept their cards close to their chest in the lead-up to season five’s release, we also know that the final season will be set in the autumn of 1987, a jump of about a year and a half from the previous season.

Matt Duffer told NME in 2022 that the fifth season will feel different from the others straight from the off. He explained: “Typically in the previous seasons, everything wraps up in a nice bow. Four and five are really [connected] together.

“[With five], there’ll be no wind-up time – like even this season, you get to experience the kids and what they’re going through in high school before things start to escalate. Then it gets crazier and crazier and crazier – that’s typically the trajectory. Five, you’re just going to be right in the middle of it so it’s going to feel very, very different.”

And, while this might be the final season of the main show, the Duffer Brothers have discussed plans for a spin-off. They told Variety in June 2022: “We do have an idea for a spin-off that we’re super excited about… but we haven’t told anyone the idea yet, much less written it.

“We think everyone – including Netflix – will be surprised when they hear the concept, because it’s very, very different. But somehow Finn Wolfhard – who is one crazy smart kid – correctly guessed what it was going to be about. But aside from Finn, no one else knows!”
