Medical dramas have once again taken over television. From the long-lasting Grey’s Anatomy and popular newcomers like The Pitt and Watson, everyone wants to see what fictional nurses, doctors, and their teams are up to. NBC’s medical drama, Brilliant Minds, is also on the list of hit medical dramas that have garnered the attention of millions of television viewers. After a successful first season that ended in January, the series, starring Zachary Quinto, was renewed for a sophomore season in May. To spice things up a bit, a popular Scandal actor has joined the series in a recurring guest star role: Bellamy Young.
According to Variety, Young will appear in the upcoming season, set to premiere in September, and will portray Dr. Amelia Frederick. Amelia is Hudson Oaks’s clinical director; a long-term mental healthcare facility. Based on the character’s official description, Frederick knows all too well the “woes of the mental healthcare system, and even despite her years in the medical field, she is not yet jaded.” Variety reports that Young’s character will be an adversary to Quinto’s Dr. Wolf, and the two will often butt heads in the season.

Brilliant Minds is inspired by author Oliver Sacks’s books The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars. Created by Michael Grassi, the medical drama, according to the official show page on NBC’s website, follows Dr. Quinto, a revolutionary neurologist, and his team of interns at Bronx General Hospital, as they explore the last great frontier: the human mind. Alongside Quinto and the new addition Young (recurring), the cast also includes Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alex MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II, and Teddy Sears. Brian Altemus and John Clarence Stewart were recently added to the cast as series regulars for the upcoming season.
Young has a history of playing fierce women, with her role on Scandal being one of the most popular. In the Kerry Washington-led political thriller, the actress played Melody “Mellie” Margaret Grant, Fitz’s (Tony Goldwyn) wife. Being the First Lady of the United States was filled with challenges, as Mellie had to deal with her husband cheating on her with Olivia Pope (Washington). Fitz demanded a divorce after she became Senator, and the character eventually became the first female President of the United States at the end of the sixth season. Young did a great job portraying the character as she was tested with many obstacles, and she’ll no doubt do the same as Dr. Amelia Frederick, challenging Dr. Wolf.

Brilliant Minds won’t be Young’s first time appearing on shows in the medical genre. In 2001, she appeared in ER in the episode “If I Should Fall from Grace” as Grace. From 2004 to 2009, the actress appeared in six episodes of Scrubs as Dr. Miller. In 2004, she portrayed Erin Berman in the Strong Medicine episode “Code.” Young would go on to appear in Grey’s Anatomy, and other non-medical series, including Nash Bridges, NCIS, The X-Files, Frasier, Medium, Boston Legal, Ghost Whisperer, Supernatural, and more.
