Netflix’s Hit Action Franchise ‘The Old Guard’ Blasts Up the Streaming Chart After the Release of the Sequel

One of Netflix’s biggest action franchises is finally back with its long-awaited sequel, and viewers are once again obsessed with the hit film franchise. The Old Guard was released in 2020 and was a decent hit among critics and audiences. Based on the graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez, the series follows an immortal group of mercenaries who are being hunted by an elite underground group. But, during the mission, they learn that their immortality isn’t as straightforward as they once thought. The sequel, aptly titled The Old Guard 2, was recently released on Netflix, and it’s shooting up the streaming chart.

The Old Guard and The Old Guard 2 are two of the most popular movies on Netflix this week. The original film holds 5th place on the streamer’s 10 most popular movies of the week list. Fans appear to be jumping straight from the original to the sequel as The Old Guard 2 sits just behind it in 6th. Charlize Theron returns for the eagerly anticipated sequel as Andy, one of the immortal Old Guard. After the original movie revealed that her former teammate, Quynh, was actually alive, Andy is now on a mission to find them and face off against Discord and the group threatening the immortals and humanity. The official synopsis reads:

“Andy and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years. Andy, Nile, Joe, Nicky and James Copley enlist the help of Tuah, an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence.”

Netflix has revealed new footage from the highly anticipated action superhero sequel, which hits the streamer next month.

The Old Guard 2 was directed by Victoria Mahoney and written by Sarah L. Walker. Alongside Theron, the sequel also stars Kiki Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Henry Golding, Veronica Ngo, and Kamil Nozynski. Most excitingly, The Old Guard 2 also saw Kill Bill’s Uma Thurman make her long-awaited return to the action genre.

‘The Old Guard’ Fans Aren’t Happy With the Sequel

Netflix

The Old Guard 2 might be popular in terms of viewership, but it’s far from immortal in the eyes of critics and audiences. The Old Guard held a decent Rotten Tomatoes rating of 80%, with a similarly strong 71% audience rating. However, the sequel has been lambasted by audiences and critics alike. The Old Guard 2 sits at a measly 28% critics’ score, with a slightly better 44% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans were hoping that The Old Guard 2 would be the next entry in a potentially long-running franchise. However, the film’s lackluster critical reception has likely put a dampener on those plans. The sequel would have to pull in some serious viewership figures to tempt Netflix to make a third.
