Following the success of the first season of Netflix’s A Man on the Inside, the streaming platform quickly renewed the show for a second season. Similar in aesthetic and tone to the Hulu streaming hit Only Murders in the Building, A Man on the Inside features Ted Danson as an unconventional private investigator, hired to do some sleuthing in a retirement home in the first season. While the first season was based on a true story (that was made into a documentary), it seems that the new episodes will be an original story that grew from the concept of the original premise.
Mike Schur, best known for creating The Good Place (which also starred Danson) and the first season of A Man on the Inside, returns for the upcoming second season. The new trailer showcases Charles Nieuwendyk (Danson) once again going undercover, this time as an engineering professor, in order to discover who blackmailed the president of the school, played by New Girl’s Max Greenfield. Along with the victim, there is a myriad of new suspects to fill out the cast, with the new season featuring Gary Cole, Michaela Conlin, Sam Huntington, David Strathairn, Jill Talley, Madison Hu, Lisa Gilroy, Linda Park, and Mary Steenburgen.
What’s most exciting is the characters that audiences grew to love in Season 1 will be returning to help Charles with his latest investigation. Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Lilah Richcreek Estrada, Stephanie Beatriz, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sally Struthers, and John Getz, who were all major characters in the original season, will all help him in what Netflix describes as “a very juicy puzzle.” There is also a new romance aspect that went unexplored in the first season, as Charles meets Mona (Steenburgen), who is describes a “free-spirited music teacher” in the official synopsis.
‘A Man on the Inside’ Season 2 Has the Makings of Another Exciting Mystery
With Schur returning to develop the second season, fans of A Man on the Inside can expect the same balance of heart and humor that he became so well known for in his work on The Good Place. Only this time around, Schur is playing in a new genre, expanding on the mysteries and intrigue of Season 1 with a new backdrop and case to solve. The character-driven charm of Schur’s work is bound to carry over into this new season, especially thanks to the idea of putting Charles in an environment that he is more familiar with.
Should the second season of A Man on the Inside prove to be a success, the premise could easily lend itself to more seasons in the future. The Netflix catalog of titles will only continue to expand, but this new season could make the Ted Danson-led series the next big flagship mystery series available on streaming. The combination of a talented ensemble and an engrossing new mystery will hopefully be too good to pass up for Netflix subscribers. Thankfully, fans won’t have to wait long for the new episodes, with A Man on the Inside season 2 set to premiere on November 20, 2025.
