Oscar Isaac on performing with Hot Chip in ‘Beef’ season two

Oscar Isaac has spoken about performing with Hot Chip for the latest season of Beef.

In the fifth episode of the show’s second season, Isaac’s character, Joshua Martin, is shown playing keys on the band’s 2006 hit ‘Over and Over’. The episode is available on Netflix now, and the scene itself was shared by the band. Check out the clip below.

In an interview with Radio Times, the Oscar nominee shared his love for the synth-pop outfit. “[Hot Chip] is a group that we talked about and one that actually meant a lot to me as well,” he explained. “I remember getting the CD in, I think, 2007 and listening to it obsessively. And the fact that we landed on them, and were able to get them to come out and play, there was just a meta level to what we were doing. So that was so exciting when [creator Lee Sung Jin] said, ‘It’s happening’.”

The scene comes as a result of a conversation in episode three, where Isaac and co-star Carey Mulligan’s characters talk about seeing Hot Chip open for LCD Soundsystem at The Hollywood Bowl, something drawn from Lee’s own experience. “That felt like we were tapping into something so specific that it could hopefully be universal to people,” the showrunner revealed to Netflix’s outlet Tudum.

“If you listen, it’s such a poppy, fun song, and I’ve danced to it at so many music festivals. But when you actually listen to the lyrics, especially within the context of what this millennial couple is going through, it’s pretty sad. That felt like a fun song for Oscar to perform with Hot Chip when he goes to Troy’s chalet.”

As for the band’s perspective, Hot Chip’s Al Doyle said: “We got our make up, hair and wardrobe sorted, and headed over to glitzy Los Angeles to see our friend Oscar Isaac and help him get his synthesiser working. An honour to be part of this project, hope you all enjoy watching!”

Frontman Alexis Taylor recently released his seventh solo album, ‘Paris In The Spring’, which described in the album’s official release as being about “freedom—from constraints, from preconceptions, and from genre.” The LP features a cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Wild Horses’.
