  • Lucy Lawless hints at potential tension in Ron and Diane’s relationship during the upcoming election cycle, given their differing political views.

Parks & Recreation remains an endlessly re-watched sitcom, following its finale in 2015, which gave every major character an emphatically happy ending. However, despite each character’s future prospects looking overwhelmingly positive, one on-screen couple might be in trouble, according to one of the stars. Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman), the die-hard libertarian (with a heart of gold) head of the Parks Department, has a rocky road when it comes to love. Having married twice, both times to women named Tammy, Ron meets Diane in Season 5 and falls head over heels. Despite their on-screen romance being unshakable, Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), who plays Diane in the show, isn’t sure what state the couple would be in now in 2024 as America gears up for the next Presidential election.

Speaking to ScreenRant, Lucy Lawless revealed that Diane and Ron’s relationship could be strained in 2024 because of their juxtaposing political viewpoints. While Diane’s political ideologies aren’t explicitly revealed in the show, Ron’s are one of the most prevalent aspects of his character. Lawless said that Ron and Diane would probably still be together, but she said that tensions in the Swanson household would be high when it comes to the election. Lawless said:

“Yes, but they might be having a tough time through this election cycle. Ron is politically quite conservative, and I’m not sure which way he would be going. I’m pretty sure Diane could not follow him.”

Ron Swanson’s Complicated Love Life, Explained

Across Parks & Recreation’s 7 seasons, Ron Swanson has had a long, and complicated journey towards finding long-lasting love and happiness. When audiences meet Ron in Season 1 he has already been divorced twice, although not a lot is revealed about his ex-wives, outside of his occasional insults towards them. Over the 7 seasons, the layers of Ron’s past are peeled back to reveal both of his wives were named Tammy (as is his mother… very Freudian) and both are polar opposites. His first wife, who is actually revealed second (try and keep up), was a hospital volunteer in their local town, and actually delivered Ron as a baby. Tammy I (Patricia Clarkson) is a cold and manipulative woman who drastically transforms the freedom-loving, mustache-touting Ron Swanson into a clean-shaven, submissive man, who seeks Tamm’s approval constantly.

With a keen ear for character development, her performances are always sensitive to the needs of the storyline.

His second wife, Tammy II (Megan Mullally), is about as far from an emotionless IRS agent as you could get. Tammy II uses her body to manipulate Ron, pushing him too far towards complete freedom, as he loses all inhibitions, blows off work, gets piercings and corn-rows, and becomes sexually obsessed. Hilariously, Megan Mullally is Nick Offerman’s wife in real life, and the two frequently work together across various shows, as well as their own podcast.

Throughout the show, Ron Swanson dates several women, including Wendy Haverford (Jama Williamson) and Linda Lonegan (Danielle Bisutti), but falls in love with Diane after being sent out to fix a pothole on her road.
