After a three-year absence, Peacemaker made its triumphant return on HBO Max with Season 2, which debuted to a perfect Rottten Tomatoes score. The raunchy superhero series has wasted no time in introducing new characters into the rebooted DC Universe, but it seems another fan-favorite DC hero could be making the jump in the upcoming episodes.
While speaking with IMDb (via X), James Gunn was told by the interviewer that they hoped to see Blue Beetle (Xolo Maridueña) in an upcoming season of Peacemaker. The filmmaker responded with “Well, you know, I won’t say you’re not in luck.” It’s a pretty telling response from Gunn, who normally likes to dispel any kind of rumors or speculation about his DC Studios projects. It’s unclear when or how Blue Beetle will make his way to the streaming series, but Gunn’s tease is the latest indication that the character is a part of the DCU canon.
The arrival of the DCU meant the recasting of its most prominent heroes, including Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. However, some of its less-familiar characters, like Peacemaker and his crew, remain intact in the new universe. Blue Beetle is also among the lucky few from the DCEU to survive the reboot. In fact, it is confirmed that Maridueña is set to star in his own animated Blue Beetle series set in the DCU. An appearance in Peacemaker could help set that up, as well as Booster Gold, another superhero getting his own HBO Max series.
