Pedro Pascal seems very unlikely to see his character in The Mandalorian meet his maker anytime soon, but in a previous life, his Game of Thrones character, Oberyn Martell, was not so lucky. Meeting his gruesome demise in one of the most memorable and brutal deaths of the entire series, which is saying something, Oberyn’s death is one that Pascal absolutely loved every minute of, although his character probably wouldn’t have the same opinion on the matter.
The death of Prince Obreyn Martell came in the eighth episode of season 4 of Game of Thrones, and provided a moment almost as shocking and unexpected as the notorious Red Wedding scenes. Having arrived earlier in the season, Oberyn starts out as a self-assured fighter and lover, coming to King’s Landing to celebrate the marriage of King Joffrey on behalf of his house.

However, it is soon revealed that Oberyn’s motives for being at the wedding are more about getting revenge on Sir Gregor Clegane, better known as The Mountain, for the killing of Oberyn’s sister and her children. After Oberyn is given the chance to fight The Mountain in Tyrion Lannister’s trail by combat, Oberyn briefly gets the upper hand on his adversary, but spends too much time talking, allowing The Mountain to gain control once again, knocking out Oberyn’s teeth before gouging his eyes and crushing his skull with his bare hands.
The death scene may have been one of the most gratuitous ever shown on TV, but for Pascal it is something he is fond of, especially having gained the reputation it had since it first aired. In an interview with Esquire, Pascal said:
“[It] makes me feel like a boss. If I’m actually up there, and if I’m in the top three [most memorable death scenes], I mean…everything thereafter is a bit futile. It’s like, what am I doing? Why am I still trying? I did it.”

Pedro Pascal’s Game Of Thrones Exit Led To Better Things
While Oberyn would probably have liked to live a little longer in Game of Thrones, the iconic nature of his death and the performance of Pascal in the series led to a lot of recognition for the actor. Having been in the industry since 1999 and mostly starring in one off guest roles in the likes of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, NYPD Blue and Law and Order, his appearance in Game of Thrones was followed by a lead role in Narcos, and that in turn led to his current role in Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
His film career has also taken off, and in recent years he has been seen in Wonder Woman 1984, for which he received the Fan Favorite Actor Golden Tomato Award, and Netflix pandemic movie The Bubble. He also features in this week’s release of the Nicolas Cage film, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, in which he co-stars with Cage in the highly praised action comedy movie in which he plays a billionaire Cage fan who pays the star $1 million to attend his birthday party.
