The Philadelphia Phillies kept Nick Castellanos out of Tuesday’s lineup against the Miami Marlins after the outfielder directed an inappropriate comment toward manager Rob Thomson.
“One thing about Nick, one of the many things about Nick, is that he is very emotional,” Thomson said Tuesday, according to The Associated Press. “He loves to play. He loves to play every inning of every game.
“I just thought last night he made an inappropriate comment after he came out. So, today, he’s not in the lineup. And I’m going to leave it at that.”
Castellanos said he was unhappy with Thomson for removing him from Monday’s 5-2 win over Miami.
“I wasn’t happy about it, spoke my mind,” Castellanos said, according to Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “He said that I crossed a line. So, my punishment is I’m not playing.”
The 33-year-old won’t be in the starting lineup for the first time since Sept. 30, 2023, ending a streak of 236 consecutive games.
Castellanos is hitting .278/.321/.425 with seven home runs and 36 RBIs in 72 games.
