Don’t worry, summer isn’t over yet. In fact, it feels like it’s just beginning, with Prime Video set to release a new teen drama series on September 1. The creator of Outer Banks, Jonas Pate, is back with a new project, The Runarounds. While the title doesn’t give much away at first, the show certainly has a lot to offer. Most of all, it channels all the Outer Banks vibes and follows a group of friends with a big dream. There’s a major twist: the main characters, William, Axel, Jeremy, Zendé, and Jesse, aren’t just fictional. Their goal of becoming a successful band mirrors their real lives. The five members are real musicians turned actors, making the story in The Runarounds even more exciting.
The real-life band members are joined by Jonas Pate’s daughter Lilah Pate; country singer Mark Wystrach; Brooklyn Decker, known for Just Go With It; Hayes MacArthur, from Merry Happy Whatever; and more. Josh Pate and Shannon Burke, who also both worked on Outer Banks, joined Jonas again as executive producers, which is even more promising. Prime Video’s eight-part series doesn’t just echo the energy of the beloved adventure series, which ends in 2026, but it also serves as a parallel story to the Pogues. Let’s take a look at how the two series are connected.
‘The Runarounds’ Tells a Relatable Story
Prime Video
The Runarounds tells the story of five friends who finish high school and want nothing more than to become successful with their band. Arguably, everyone has been at a point in their life where the question arose whether to follow someone’s expectations and take the safe route or take a risk and follow their dream.
The group’s choice to stay true to their dreams, despite the risk of failure, will likely inspire many viewers. Yes, it is a TV series, but it is also inspired by a true story. William Lipton, Zendé Murdock, Jeremy Yun, Axel Ellis, and Jesse Golliher were chosen to form the musical group, The Runarounds. In a way, these five musicians/actors were in a similar position. Had they not taken a risk, then they wouldn’t be at the center of this upcoming Outer Banks-inspired series. Maybe it truly is just like Rudy Pankow’s JJ in Outer Banks said:
“Stupid things have good outcomes all the time.”
The music industry is cutthroat, and seeing that the band is from Wilmington, they perhaps have to work even harder compared to bands located in a music hub. On top of this, in the show, the members of The Runarounds face hurdles stemming from love and Outer Banks-style rivalry. At the end of the day, though, they are just high school graduates who learn about life, who they truly are, and what they want to be.
How ‘The Runarounds’ and ‘Outer Banks’ Are Connected
Prime Video
Maybe you don’t know it, but if you have watched Outer Banks, then you have already seen the members of The Runarounds. Before Season 3 of the YA drama series on Netflix started filming, the production released an open casting call to find a band. The Runarounds members were chosen from among 5000 contestants, and they were a part of a special scene in Outer Banks. In Episode 7 of the third season, “Happy Anniversary,” Kiara’s parents, Mike and Anna, are celebrating their anniversary. Of course, they needed some music, and what better way than to hire an aspiring rock band and give them the chance to shine?
The Runarounds performed during that scene, and not long after, they became the focus of the Outer Banks “spin-off”. After the band was formed, they stayed together, started to record music, and continued their union on and off the new Prime Video series. While Outer Banks was set in the fictional town of Kildare, and The Runarounds will be set in Wilmington, the fact that they performed at that event still draws a clear connection. Additionally, the show’s warm visual style and use of the same filming locations make the Prime Video series a must-watch. The Runarounds will be available to stream on Prime Video on September 1.
