Get ready for more adventures from Neil McCauley and Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, as a follow-up to Michael Mann’s hit 1995 crime drama Heat is officially in the works. However, instead of a film, it will be in the form of a novel. Plans for the book date back to 2016 when Mann announced plans for a prequel as a part of his newly formed imprint, Michael Mann Books. Due in part to Mann’s direction and the performances of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, Heat is regarded as one of the best films in the crime drama genre. It has inspired similar works for over 25 years since its original release.
Fans of the original Heat have been champing at the bit to learn more details, yet recent news has also put the film’s prospects in peril. We will power forward optimistically, reviewing what fans could expect from Heat 2 and explaining why its future hinges on Warner Bros.
What We Remember from ‘Heat’
Release Date
December 15, 1995
Runtime
170 minutes
In the original film, De Niro’s Neil McCauley led a group of thieves pursued by Pacino’s Lieutenant Vincent Hanna in a vicious game of cat and mouse. The film depicted the intersecting paths of the two men and the effect that the events had on both their professional and personal lives. The movie ends with a confrontation between Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) on the runway of LAX airport that led to De Niro’s character being fatally shot. This scene would lead to the iconic closing line, “I told you I ain’t never going back,” showing McCauley’s acceptance of death over prison.
The ending of Heat was conclusive with no real cliffhanger. Thankfully, Michael Mann will likely not retcon the ending of the Heat film when approaching Heat 2, and fans can expect the original movie to most likely be honored when considering the content found in the novel. Instead, a film adaptation of Heat 2 will likely shift focus onto Vincent Hanna and his chase of Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer), while still including Neil McCauley as his history with both characters is explored through past events.

What the Novel for ‘Heat 2’ Tells Us About the Movie
Warner Bros.
The Heat 2 novel, co-written by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner, acts as a prequel and a sequel to the popular heist movie. Taking off directly after the events of the film, with Chris Shiherlis wounded and on the run from Vincent Hanna, who is trying to hunt down any surviving members of McCauley’s crew.
This initial chase acts as a jumping-off point for Shiherlis to reflect on seven years previous when, along with McCauley, he pulled off a series of high-stakes heists in Chicago and the US-Mexican border. Here, the paths of Hanna and McCauley cross in an unexpected way when the detective becomes involved in a case involving a violent home invasion gang. Once again tying the fate of Hanna to McCauley and his crew, the novel also explores several years later, where Chris Shiherlis and the deceased criminal’s daughter are drawn into a new murder case in Chicago, which Hanna is leading the investigation.

It may just be a tiny blot on their otherwise sterling careers, but ‘Blackhat’ was a real stinker for Chris Hemsworth and Michael Mann.
The fan and critical response to the Heat 2 novel was mostly positive. Notably, many appreciated how much it stuck to the core movie and honored what came before it while building on what fans had already loved. The ambitious approach also paid off, creating a broader picture of the life of Detective Hanna and making his connections to characters like McCauley and Shiherlis become a decades-spanning feud. With such attention to detail and focus on building on what happened in the movie, fans can expect a very faithful adaptation of the book onto the screen, that is, if it happens.
What We Know About the Release of the Movie ‘Heat 2’
Warner Bros.
Heat 2 has been long in development, with the initial release window originally set for August 2022. Of course, the pandemic and writer’s strike have delayed many productions, but even then, the script has been submitted and approved, but nothing else has moved past this point; a potential release date is not even speculative at this point anymore. This means no cast or crew beyond Mann’s and Gardiner’s implied involvement, which seems inevitable.
Complicating issues, Warner Bros. is coming off a series of disappointments in various media, with videogames and movies all turning a low profit or losing money for the production giant. The box office performance of the upcoming Superman movie has been slated as a potential release to determine its future with various projects, including Heat 2. Part of the issues come from Michael Mann asking for “too much money” for the project, and whether Warner Bros. decides to commit to the project depends on whether they can beat their current bad streak. For now, fans can grab a copy of Heat 2 and get an idea of what the film may look like.
