Free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers visited the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday but left the team’s facility without a deal, sources told Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The veteran passer spent time with Steelers coaches – including head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith – but a deal is not imminent, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
The Steelers and Rodgers have had contract parameters in place for weeks and didn’t discuss money Friday, sources told Pelissero. Their recent visit was reportedly a chance for both sides to get to know each other. Friday’s meeting was positive and the parties will stay in touch, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The Steelers – as well as the New York Giants – have been linked to the four-time NFL MVP since his release from the New York Jets. Pittsburgh and New York are both looking for a new QB1 and waiting for Rodgers to make a decision before they potentially explore other options under center. Russell Wilson, who played for the Steelers in 2024, recently met with the Giants.
The Minnesota Vikings reportedly also considered signing Rodgers, but Kevin O’Connell’s outfit is expected to move forward with J.J. McCarthy at quarterback.
The Steelers saw both of their 2024 signal-callers, Wilson and Justin Fields, hit free agency this year. Fields signed a two-year, $40-million contract with the Jets.
Rodgers is coming off a disappointing two-season stint with the Jets. The 41-year-old passed for 28 touchdowns in 2024 – the most he’s thrown since 2021 – but New York went only 5-12 with him under center. He also tossed 11 interceptions, tied for his third-worst single-season mark.
