Rose McGowan and Anna Paquin call for greater protections for child stars while paying tribute to Hayden Panettiere

Hayden Panettiere’s tragic death has triggered conversations about the lack of protections offered to child stars, with Rose McGowan, Anna Paquin and more calling for tighter regulations.

On Friday (August 21), both McGowan and Paquin shared moving tributes to the late actress, who died at age 36, while each taking aim at the “profoundly sad” treatment of child actors.

Famous for her roles in Heroes, Nashville, and the Scream franchise, Panettiere died in her home in South Carolina on August 16. Her death was announced by her father Skip, who described her as “an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her”. An official cause of death has not been disclosed, but 911 dispatch audio revealed medical personnel were treating her for a “suspected overdose”.

“Rest in Power Hayden Panettiere. Don’t put kids in show business,” McGowan urged on social media. “None of this is normal. May her spirit be free of those who orchestrated.”

McGowan is a fellow alum of the Scream franchise, having portrayed Tatum Riley in the 1996 original before Panettiere starred as Kirby Reed in Scream 4 and Scream VI.

Paquin echoed that sentiment, writing: “It’s not a coincidence that so many former, specifically pre-sexualized female, child ‘stars’ have profoundly sad lives and untimely ends,” she continued on Instagram. “We were not as protected by the ‘systems’ that look great on paper, as we are supposed to be.”

“RIP [Hayden Panettiere], [Michelle Trachtenberg], [Daveigh Chase] and too many others. It’s a strange small club we belong to and you are worthy of support no matter how our industry made us feel.

“Literally DM me. I believe you and I will stand by your side. You aren’t alone. Let’s have each other’s backs. It might make public disclosure less terrifying.”

She later clarified that she was speaking “very specifically about the experience as a child on set that finds themselves prematurely a ‘sex object’.”

“I’m not implying damage is not done outside of the context of entertainment,” she said. “But that is a longer post for a different moment. Also I used the women’s initials because I ran out of space. Nothing to be read into. Just logistics.”

Having made her first on-screen appearance at 11 months old in a Playskool toy advert, Panettiere broke out as a child star in Disney’s Remember the Titans, and went on to secure roles in Ally McBeal, Raising Helen, Tiger Cruise, Racing Stripes, Ice Princess, Malcolm in the Middle and Bring It On: All or Nothing, all before she turned 18.

In her first statement since her daughter’s death, Panettiere’s mother, Lesley Vogel, recently spoke out against the actor’s former partner, Brian Hickerson, who was said to be with her at the time of her death.

Panettiere claimed in her recent memoir that he domestically abused her, something he acknowledged in an interview with TMZ in May, and Vogel expressed her “concern” about his influence on her. Vogel and Panettiere had been estranged for some time before her death.

“This person in her life that we have been trying to get rid of for quite some time was with her at her death, and that was Brian Hickerson,” Vogel told NBC News on Tuesday (August 18). “There is a lot of history in the past that Brian has enabled Hayden many times and this is why her father and I had been concerned for a long time about him.”

Discussing her daughter, she said: “I think Hayden was an amazingly talented person in so many departments and I think young people who grow up in the entertainment industry — it is a struggle and it’s a very challenging industry and it’s not unusual for them to sadly find the wrong path.”

Tributes have poured in from the entertainment industry since Hayden Panettiere’s passing, with Heroes co-star Sendhil Ramamurthy recalling how she supported “mistreated” background actors and “knew every crew member’s name”.
