Scott Jennings Wants Decibel Police To Silence Loud Talkers

It was Scott Jennings, political commentator, who started this ridiculously hilarious and tragically relatable conversation on Twitter with his joking about establishing “Decibel Police” to ticket loudmouths. The tweet went viral, with hundreds chiming in with their own complaints or defenses of loud conversationalists: If I had a magic wand, I’d create the “Decibel Police” to crack down on loud talkers. Loud people, why are you the way that you are?”

Jennings has long been known for hard-edged political commentary, but he took the seldom-used sidestep of universal annoyances, and many took the bait. Some of the replies were downright hilarious, such as Kristen Gough’s: “Stephen Miller is a loud talking knob. Nothing but shouting misinformation.” Others, like Stephen Carter, spoke unculturedly with cultural differences in mind: “Not sure if you ever noticed this, but when I switch from an American podcast to a British podcast, I almost always have to turn up the volume a couple of clicks. Americans are loud.”

Others saw nothing funny about it. KP might have sarcastically replied, “The ‘decibel police’ would be deemed to be racist cause who’s really talking the loudest?” Meanwhile, Charles W. took the whole thing full military vet style: “For some of us it’s tinnitus from hearing bombing and shooting for years. For the left, it’s because they have nothing of value so they just yell louder.”

There were better comments following the line of really loud is fun. Ira said: “Except 3am being little drunk. But that is another level of existence. No one controls the volume at 3am and no one cares.” Anthony Zecca hit the nail: “Everyone is talking loud because none of us can hear anything either.”

Usually at the forefront of serious political discussions, Jennings hit a sore spot with this one. Loud talkers are here to stay. Whether due to cultural differences or some hearing impairment, or just way too much joy. So, again, loud talkers are here to stay. At least, we all agree on duct-taping their mouths during brunch.

And if so much as nothing else comes up from this very one tweet satire, then recognizance should be drawn from either political angle; that person yelling into their phone on the public transit deserves a special place in hell. Or at least a ticket from the Decibel Police.
