She-Hulk Writers Were Given a Lot of Freedom on the Series’ Jokes, With One Exception

She-Hulk is an all-out MCU comedy series, and when it came to writing jokes for the show, there was very little that was out of bounds.

Marvel Studios

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is poking fun at the MCU in a way that has not been seen before in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it seems that Marvel had a limit on one aspect of how far some of the jokes went. As we have already seen in Deadpool, breaking the fourth wall is a great way for on-screen characters to air their opinions and poke fun at a variety of subjects, and Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters is getting to do that in the MCU before the Merc With a Mouth gets his chance. However, it seems that while there were seemingly no subjects that were out of bounds for She-Hulk’s writers, provided they were not too brutal towards Marvel itself.

While discussing the show with IGN, Jessica Gao talked about the freedom that was granted to her and the show’s other writers when it came to putting humor in the show. While it is unlikely that anything as risky as some of the quips coming soon from Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool would ever be on the cards for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, there doesn’t seem to be too much that was not allowed to stay in the show. Gao said:

“Yeah, I mean, most of the time, the only jokes that they really forced us to pull back on were when we were being a little too mean when we were poking fun at Marvel things. Well, I think what this shows and should be reassuring to fans is that Marvel now has gotten to a point where they’re willing to expand into areas that they’ve never gone to before. And they’re open to doing that, and trying new things, and getting into areas that were outside of their comfort zone previously.”

Like many Marvel projects, She-Hulk has been on the receiving end of several suspect reviews, both excessively good and bad. While there seem to be many 1-star reviews being given to the show from users who have seeming signed up to Rotten Tomatoes just to make a comment only on She-Hulk, the show has still proven a hit with critics, and the majority of its 10,000+ audience reviews. Following the first episode, the audience rating sat at 71%, and the arrival of the second episode has seen that increase to 74%.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law has been the target of negativity from the moment its first trailer arrived, with Jennifer Walter’s alter-ego’s appearance being criticized for numerous reasons, including her size and the CGI effects used to bring her to life. This was not helped by rumors that the show’s production didn’t go quite as planned and was described as “a mess” by some insiders. However, with two episodes now available, the majority of people are enjoying the latest addition to the MCU, and with many cameos, Easter eggs, and surprises still to be revealed, it is unlikely that the show will see a huge drop in its current ratings as new episodes are released.
