SNL Announces Lizzo as Musical Guest for Year’s Final Episode

For the year’s final episode hosted by Austin Butler, Lizzo will replace the previously-announced Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

NBC

After losing Yeah Yeah Yeahs for the final episode of Saturday Night Live for the year, the sketch comedy series has brought in Lizzo as a replacement. It had been previously announced that Yeah Yeah Yeahs would serve as the musical guest for the Dec. 17 episode alongside Elvis star Austin Butler making his hosting debut. It was to be the second time the band appeared in that capacity on the show after serving as a musical guest in 2009 for an episode hosted by Zac Efron.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have since announced that they had to pull out of SNL due to band member Nick Zinner’s ongoing recovery from pneumonia. The band posted a statement on social media explaining that Zinner’s health was most important, leading to the unfortunate decision to cancel scheduled engagements like the SNL appearance.

“We are deeply thankful and expectedly heartbroken we cannot rise to these occasions,” the statement reads in part. “It’s been a tough week, and it’s been a tough year on the health front for us alongside so many artists who are committed to connecting with audiences amidst a pandemic. We send our love to our fans and supporters, thank you for your understanding and well wishes, it means the world to us. Wishing you a healthy and happy rest of 2022, we’re looking forward to a strong return in 2023.”

Lizzo Saves the Day at SNL

Fortunately, Lizzo was available to fill in, and she has been announced as the new musical guest for the Dec. 17 episode. Earlier this year, Lizzo impressed viewers when she pulled double duty as host and musical guest for a show in April. She has previously served as a musical guest in 2019, making this her third time coming onto the show in that capacity. Lizzo also shared an image on her Instagram page of the SNL corkboard featuring her name.

The announcement came as Steve Martin and Martin Short co-hosted the Dec. 10 episode with Brandi Carlile as musical guest. Like Lizzo did in April, Megan Thee Stallion and Jack Harlow have also pulled double duty with hosting and musical duties this season. Other combos we’ve seen so far for season 48 include Miles Teller and Kendrick Lamar; Brendan Gleeson and Willow; Amy Schumer and Steve Lacy; Dave Chappelle and Black Star; and Keke Palmer and SZA.
