San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams didn’t report to training camp due to contract-related issues, head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.
Discussions between Williams and the team have “been going on for a while,” Shanahan said, per CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
Williams is subject to a $50,000 fine for each missed day of training camp.
Williams ranks third among all left tackles with a $23.01-million average annual value on his existing deal, according to Over the Cap. Only the New York Giants’ Andrew Thomas ($23.5 million) and Laremy Tunsil of the Houston Texans ($25 million) have contracts with a higher AAV.
Williams is under contract through 2026. He is scheduled to carry cap hits of approximately $31.5 million, $34.1 million, and $37.8 million each of the next three years, per Over the Cap.
The Oklahoma product remains one of the NFL’s premier left tackles despite turning 36 on July 19. He’s made three consecutive first-team All-Pro squads and 11 Pro Bowls in a row. The 6-foot-5, 320-pound blocker appeared in 15 games last season, playing 85% of the offense’s snaps in those games.
Niners wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is also unhappy with his current contract, though Aiyuk elected to report to training camp as he seeks a new deal.
