A Guide to Selecting the Perfect Cue Stick

If you are a novice billiards player or you’re considering learning the sport, it is crucial to know how to select the right pool stick. You may not realize it at first, but using the wrong cue stick can seriously affect your play and overall performance. When you start playing with the right cue stick, you’ll be amazed at how much your game improves.

Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a cue stick.

Choose the right cue tip diameter

Pool sticks come in many sizes, and the diameter of the tip greatly influences your play. Cue sticks with larger tip diameters are best for beginners as this will help you pocket balls more easily. On the other hand, advanced players prefer pool sticks with smaller cue diameters as it allows them to apply sidespin on the ball. Ideally, you should start with a pool stick with at least a 13 mm tip diameter. A larger surface area will land challenging shots more easily. You can start experimenting with smaller cue tips to master different advanced tricks as you progress.

Identify the right cue stick weight

The best pool cue brands offer cue sticks in various weights. Like choosing the cue tip diameter, you must consider your skill level when selecting the right stick weight. It is recommended to start with lighter pool sticks weighing around 15 ounces until you can master pocketing the more challenging shots.

Consider your hand size when choosing a pool stick

Choosing the correct shaft diameter is an integral element of the cue stick selection process. Shaft diameters range between 12 mm to 13 mm. Start using a billiard stick with a smaller diameter. Then, increase by ¼ mm increments as you progress and become more comfortable playing with a cue stick with a longer shaft. Moreover, the size of your hands should be considered during the selection process. Smaller hands mean you should prefer a stick with a smaller shaft diameter. Bigger or longer isn’t always better, and your deciding factor should be your comfort while taking shots.

Choose the right shaft taper

You must choose between the three different styles of shaft tapers, namely standard, pro tapers, and double tapers. A pool stick with a standard taper decreases in diameter from the butt to tip evenly. On the other hand, one with a pro taper features an even diameter for the first twelve inches of the stick from the butt before it begins to taper near the tip. Lastly, a double taper cue stick is thickest near the butt and thinnest at the middle section of the shaft. Beginners should start by using a cue stick with standard tapers to provide the most stability.

Conclusion

Selecting the right cue stick will increase your accuracy and precision when making challenging shots in billiards. By following the above tips when shopping for the right pool stick, you can rest assured that you’ll find one which will boost your comfort and performance.
