The San Francisco 49ers are trading running back Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Minnesota is also signing Mason to a two-year contract worth up to $12 million with over $7 million guaranteed, Rapoport and Pelissero add. The Vikings are sending San Francisco a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-rounder, while Minnesota will receive a 2025 sixth-round pick.
Mason stepped into the starting running back role for a portion of last season due to Christian McCaffrey’s Achilles injury. He suited up in 12 contests, rushing for 789 yards on 153 attempts for an average of 5.2 yards per carry.
The Vikings re-signed their 2024 leading rusher, Aaron Jones, to a two-year, $20-million contract last week. Ty Chandler, who ran for 182 yards last year, is also under contract for the 2025 campaign.
After returning from his Achilles injury, McCaffrey found himself on injured reserve in early December due to a knee injury and missed the remainder of the year. He’s expected to recover for the upcoming season. Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr. are also on San Francisco’s depth chart at running back.
Mason entered the league in 2022 as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Tech.
