Sirianni shoulders blame for Eagles’ struggles

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni is taking responsibility for his team’s struggles amid its three-game losing streak.

“This offense is being run the exact same how it was last year,” Sirianni said Wednesday, according to Josh Tolentino of The Philadelphia Inquirer. “This is my offense. The criticism unfairly goes to (offensive coordinator) Brian Johnson because he’s calling the plays. The criticism should go to me. The offense has been similar throughout my three years.”

The Eagles have lost three in a row, most recently to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football after allowing a last-minute touchdown. Philadelphia hasn’t scored more than 20 points in any of those matchups.

Philly’s offense still ranks fifth in EPA/play on the season, but the unit is only the 14th-best in the league in that category in the last three weeks.

The Eagles, who rank 26th in points allowed, recently made a big change by naming senior assistant Matt Patricia their defensive play-caller instead of defensive coordinator Sean Desai. Sirianni, however, isn’t planning on making a similar move on the offensive side of the ball.

“I’m not thinking a change needs to be made there,” Sirianni added, according to Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Sirianni was also asked about whether his offense is predictable at the moment after San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey – who faced Philadelphia three weeks ago – predicted an Eagles play on the “ManningCast” during Monday’s loss.

“It’s about what you do well and repeating those things,” Sirianni said. “That’s pretty common of good offenses that they’re going to have staples that they lean on.”

Philadelphia reached the Super Bowl last season but ultimately fell short against the Kansas City Chiefs. Owners of one of the NFL’s most talented rosters, the Eagles kept most of their stars in the offseason. However, they lost former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to head coaching jobs.

The Eagles, who’ve already clinched a playoff berth in 2023, play the New York Giants twice and the Arizona Cardinals in their final three regular-season games.
