It’s all too easy to curl up inside and spend too much time watching TV or playing video games in the summer. With how hot it is, many people end up indoors more frequently, even though the sky is clear and adventure is waiting. If you’re looking for fun things to do this summer, put on your favorite pair of canvas sneakers and try the following.
Head to an Amusement Park
Spend a day at a local amusement park or travel a bit further to go to one of the big ones. No matter which one you pick, it’s sure to be a fantastic day. Take it a little slow and plan ahead to get the most out of the day. Though this can be a more expensive activity, it is time spent outdoors having fun and is perfect for all ages.
Spend Time Picking Strawberries
Strawberry season is in, so look for local u-pick farms that offer strawberry picking. Be careful – they’re so delicious when they’re picked fresh, it’s easy to go a bit overboard. There are also farms that offer blueberry, blackberry, or peach picking, depending on what’s in season at the time.
Watch a Parade
Parades are common in many cities, and they’re a lot of fun to watch. Kids will thoroughly enjoy watching everything that goes by, and even younger kids are sure to have a fantastic time. Check local websites to find out the time and place for the next parade.
Take a Road Trip
Got a bit of wanderlust? Grab the car keys, fill it up with gas, and head out on a road trip. It’s possible to spend time planning each part of the trip carefully or just heading out and seeing where the road goes. Hotels can have high occupancy rates in the summer, so make sure there is somewhere safe and comfortable to rest at night, no matter the destination.
Start a Veggie Garden
Start growing food right at home. There are tons of veggies that are perfect for beginners to grow, and a backyard isn’t even needed. A small space outside on a patio or balcony is perfect for container gardening, so even those who live in apartments can give it a try. Don’t have any outdoor space? Just make a little room near a window.
Run Through the Sprinklers
Dash through the sprinklers, getting a little bit soaked and having a ton of fun. It’s not necessary to have kids run through them with you, but it does make it more fun. It’s not even necessary to get in a swimsuit. Just turn on the sprinklers and have fun splashing in the water.
Give to Others
Take some time to give to others, whether that’s volunteering or doing a random act of kindness. It doesn’t take much, and it’s possible to give to just about anyone. Along with feeling good about helping others, this is a great way to help others feel great, too.
Walk or Run a 5k
Get outside and participate in a 5k. Many of them offer a fun run, where participants can choose to walk or run. Often, strollers are allowed for the fun run, so it’s possible to get the whole family involved. Pick a race based on the theme or choose one that is done to raise money for a charity.
Go Camping
Sleep under the stars for the night. Not ready to go camping at a campground? That’s fine. Spend time camping in the backyard, instead. All that’s needed is a tent, a flashlight for telling scary stories, and some snacks to enjoy. If it rains or anything else happens, the tent can be brought inside to continue the fun.
Learn to Bowl
Bowling has been a way for people to have fun for many years now, and it’s still a fantastic way to spend the afternoon. Even if you’ve never bowled before, now’s a great time to try it out and have a little bit of fun. Bowling is an inexpensive activity, too, so it’s a perfect option for those who are on a budget.
Don’t spend the summer on the couch. Get out and have a ton of fun. Try out all of these ideas and see which ones you’ll like to do again and again.
