‘Superman’ Sneak Peek Has Divided the Internet Ahead of DCU Debut

James Gunn enthusiastically promoted his long-awaited Superman movie at this year’s CinemaCon, which was undoubtedly one of the Las Vegas event’s most anticipated moments. The filmmaker even unveiled a special sneak peek of the film for those attending to enjoy. However, the DCU fandom was clearly divided by just how fragile Kal-El appeared during the sequence that takes place within the Fortress of Solitude sequence. Apparently, this more vulnerable representation of the beloved superhero irked many viewers. One social media user sounded off by saying, courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter:

“James Gunn gets it, they said. He won’t make it a stupid comedy, they said. They said he understood the assignment. That was the worst Superman clip I have ever seen. It’s an utter joke, and it’s all about Krypto.”

The controversial footage extended upon the wintry scene appearing in the official teaser trailer, in which a bruised, bloodied, and battered Man of Steel (David Corenswet) is rescued by his faithful dog, Krypto. The Kryptonian canine drags Superman into the Fortress during CinemaCon’s sneak peek, so the fallen hero can be attended to by four automatons. The robots magnify the intense rays of the yellow sun to treat Kal-El as he wails in agony during the healing process. Another upset fan wrote:

“The real Superman doesn’t need a bunch of robots to carry him over to a table to heal… and doesn’t whine like a little bit*h when the sun hits him.”

James Gunn Says His ‘Superman’ Star Is a “Pain in the Ass,” but in the Best Way Possible

The ‘Superman’ director dishes about his film’s leading man just hours ahead of Warner Bros. Pictures’ CinemaCon presentation.

Wrongly, or rightly, one fan even compared Gunn’s version of The Last Son of Krypton to filmmaker Zack Snyder’s Superman, who was portrayed by Henry Cavill in the now defunct DCEU. The online user specifically pointed out the Man of Steel’s epic battle with Doomsday in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice by saying:

“Snyder’s Superman literally took a nuke at point-blank range and healed from the sun without feeling any pain from its radiation, which is accurate in the comics. Gunn’s mediocre interpretation is screaming in agony.”

Everyone Loves Krypto the Superdog!

“Who let the dogs out?” Well, obviously, it was James Gunn, not the Baha Men. CinemaCon’s Superman sneak peek enraged many fans, because of how vulnerable Kal-El (Corenswet) was portrayed, but the majority of those who watched the five-minute footage agreed that the preview’s one saving grace was none other than Krypto the Superdog. Krypto acts much like other ordinary pups, who are thrilled to see their owners come home after a long absence. One fan wrote about the “super” relationship in the sneak peek’s comments on YouTube:

“As a dog owner, Krypto jumping on Superman all excited, not realizing it hurts, is too real for me lol”

Superman shrieks in pain as Krypto pounces on him after finding the Man of Steel lying still in the snow. Unaware Kal-El is severely injured, the pup playfully gnaws at his boot and later the sleeve of his costume in the hopes his owner will play with him. Another fan pointed out the automatons’ chilly prognosis and then wrote this hilarious response in the comments:

“‘Fourteen fractured bones.’ Thanks Krypto for 13 of those 😂”

Another fan of the Kryptonian canine from Gunn’s Superman film wrote:

“I was lying on my bed and laughed hysterically at Krypto’s acts. My excited Lab jumped upon me and broke 14 bones of mine.”

The contentious footage is also being shown before Jason Momoa and Jack Black’s A Minecraft Movie, which is playing exclusively in theaters worldwide, and was released online, as can be seen above. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Superman takes flight in cinemas on July 11.
